I was wondering if a true weatherby stock would fit on the vanguard series.

    Thanks

It would not be ok to have an action rock. When the screws are tightened you could bind the bolt.

I would clean/scrape the entire area and rebed with like 5# of up pressure on the bbl. Then scrape all the bbl channel except the last 1/2 inch or so. If it doesn't shoot good remove that last 1/2 inch to fully free float the bbl.

Pay really good attention to your release agent, a really small untreated area can cause you major problems.

The end of the forearm tip I leave unscraped so as to apply the 5# of up pressure on the bbl. I really liked the old Micro Bed as it was very thick and didn't run out of the stock when held upside in the vice. I hung a 5# weight on the bbl to generate the dampening tension.

I have done a couple of bed jobs in the past. You say scrape the barrel channel except the last half inch. Is that at the action end or the barrel end? I just want to make sure I understand fully. Thanks

Thanks for the clarification. I just got done removing the old bedding and sanding the barrel channel. I do have some pressure at the forend tip. I will check tomorrow to see how much. Thanks for the help. Jim.

    kallie,

quote:It seems to me that the action should "settle in with no movement".

That's a good way to say it.

We teach students that a proper bedding job is stress-free. As you point out, it shouldn't rock and there shouldn't be any pressure exerted on any point of the action or barrel except at the screws where the action is pulled down into the bedding. Folks still want to put a little upward pressure on the skinny factory barrels at the forend tip since they are usually button rifled and stressed to the max. But I suggest trying it without any pressure first then adding it if absolutely necessary.

These are generally hunting rifles not competition rifles so little tiny groups will be the exception not the rule. The best procedure is to look for round groups with a good load and a bullet chosen for the game. Tuning by load development is half the fun.

    Best.

Weatherby guns came in different barrel contours, #1, #2, #3, the #1 was for the 24" barrel and the rest for 26"

Bedding done. Now on to the stock work. I am adding a rosewood grip cap, contouring the grip area and reforming the cheek piece for more definition. Going for a Vanguard / MarkV hybrid look.

Also, any suggestions for a stain to enhance the somewhat plain grain pattern?
