AR-15 Kits
I have a Bushmaster stripped lower receiver and would like to put together a varmint rifle. I have been looking at the kits offered in Shotgun News. Does anyone have any input about the quality of these kits. I have seen two businesses that routinely offer them. Would I just be better off ordering the parts from Bushmaster? I don't want any low quality off-brands. I'm willing to pay a little more for quality.

Hello, any advice on best value AR rifle kits? I see many upper choices, tips on best deals? I don't want a high-dollar rifle, can this be done for less than a basic DPMS Sportical price?

NO! Built one last year from a M16A1 kit and semi-auto lower. By the time I bought all the parts for the lower, and tools I didn't have from Midway, I could of bought a basic DPMS model from Bud's cheaper. This includes the dealer transfer and shipping fees to my FFL. 0 -

The only "cheap" way to build is to look for specials or deals on all the parts, and expect to take a while to assemble it as you acquire what you need. IMO it's getting tougher now, as the election-year rush is starting again and things are selling out. I think it'll calm down after the election hoopla like it did a few years ago.
A lot of folks like the idea of building their own things, and AR's are about the only gun around that anyone with a few tools and a basic idea of how things work can put an entire customized gun together from a pile of parts. There's nothing wrong with taking your time to get what you need and doing it yourself...or even buy a complete DPMS then build a different style upper from parts later on. (2 guns in one; maybe an 16" with EoTech for #1 and a 24" bull barrel scoped varminter with #2)
I have 2 older ones, and this year I built 2 more from the ground up (And I have a 5th stripped lower on "10-day wait" as we speak). I did mine up as a 14.5 pinned M-4, 16" pencil-barrel lightweight, 16" bull bbl target and 20" national match. I registered receiver #5 as a pistol, but I have nothing for it yet.

I like Del Ton and PSA. DTI makes good quality, low priced rifle kits. If you can snag a stripped lower on sale...ie. Spikes for $69.99 or a PSA $59.99 you can build a basic good quality 16" rifle for under $600. 0 -

My carbine has an LMT upper (complete) I got for $475. (A great deal on auction) My Del-Ton lower cost me $69, so I bought five more. Each one uses a 'lower' package that can run about $120.00 (incl. stock). But that is pretty much basic stuff. I opted for some upgrades that cost more, but were worth it. All told my carbine, customized the way I like it, cost me less than $750.00. A basic set-up could run as low as $500. I built one of those too. You just gotta keep looking for the deals.0 -
shilo is real close. there are so many parts and people out there right now with ar's. i just put one together for under 500 bucks. this now is the golden time to put these things together before the election process! hit the shows and look for people walkin around with stuff. too much surplus and alot of empty wallets. you might be suprised. 0 -
Probably the most important part NOT to buy in a kit is a stock trigger assembly.
There are plenty of good triggers around that make a world of difference
in how well an AR shoots.
I put in JP trigger that took a bit of screwing around to get right but works nicely at 52-54 ounces with little overtravel.
Were I to do it again, I'd buy a drop in assembly.0 -

Or just buy a Superior Arms lower. It is the only lower in existence that comes with a trigger adjustment screw. It is the best standard trigger you can buy and you don't need to spend an additional $150-$200 on an after market trigger. $200 more you can save or add to other parts of your AR.0
