Sfield M1A bolt
The bolt on my brand new (less than 100 rounds) rifle is slightly curved concavely, looking at it from the side it almost seems bent....is this normal? I cannot fnd a photo on the internet of a sideview of a bolt. I am a novice so I hope this isn't a silly question....but it seems the bolt should be straight edged on the bottom.....?? Incidentally the first 3 rounds I tried to fire from this rifle failed to fire....and from there every fifth or so round of the next fifty did not fire but there was a dimple in each primer area of the cases....any thoughts?

Did you field strip your rifle, clean it thoroughly, oil it, & then put grease on the correct surfaces?
What kind of ammo are you using?
The bolt is likely normal. What markings are on the top?

I did not clean it before firing it...bolt marking on top is 7790186-SA...F00231....I am in the process of cleaning it now. Used Federal ammo... 0 -
The misfires could very well be caused by "crud" in the firing pin channel that prevents it from giving a good healthy whack to the primer. It is improbable that you have a bent bolt. They are pretty sturdy parts and probably wouldn't cycle at all if it was warped. I think a good cleaning with lots of solvent will fix your problems. Don't forget to clean and lube all parts that come in contact with the bolt. If it fails to completely close and lock, that can also cause malfunctions. Good luck. [:)] 0 -
Its better to be safe than sorry and it sounds like you need to head space the rifle and find out if the bolt and chamber are good. The manufacture does in most cases ask that the new owner to clean the rifle before firing it. The bolt not closing completely could be a dirty rifle, no lubrication or weak return spring.
