Found an M1A1 at auction for sale, what is involved to install selector switch, which I have, but need spring and rollpin. Have heard that other mods have to be done? At a loss as to whether to buy gun if it cannot be converted.

Interesting question, but moot. It is a federal crime to convert a semiauto to full auto. To quote Sheriff Buford T. Justice, "You can think about it, but don't do it." [:D]
If you want a full automatic weapon, legally, the only way to do it is to buy one that is already working and is on file with the feds.

To install the switch it has to go onto the selector shaft, which the M1A1 receiver will not have and in fact cannot have without being a machine gun. The switch itself is little more than a bobble which you could use as an ear ring if you chose to do so; it is not a controlled part and by itself cannot be used to convert a semi auto rifle to selective fire.

the making of new machine guns has been banned for personal use for quite some time and to make a new machine gun for gov/mil/export use you need to hold a type 10 ffl with an sot.

im assuming, since this is a very basic question for a person with the above papers, that you you dont hold that license; thus if you live in the states its not legal for you to do so. i suppose im also assuming that you live in the states.

A Type 10 FFL is a Manufacturer of Destructive Devices. You would need a Type 07 FFL and a Class 2 SOT to manufacture machine guns.

Is it just me or are we getting more of these questions lately?

    Slow month at the ATF?

Just to keep it on track, making it full auto is a felony. Good luck with getting any help with that here.

Perhaps you can post a link to the auction you are looking at, or, photos of the rifle.

I suspect that the gun in question is not even an M1A1.

You could put the switch on the rifle by soldering it to a pin that has no use and the switch would just flop around in the stock. It would just be a little toy unless you run into some that knows what it is and spend some time explaining that it is a toy. What they said if you do not want a toy!
