Marlin 1895m 45-70 help
My dad recentlly bought me this gun as a surprise after a fishing trip, it came with a ghost ring peep site. I dont know much about it and ive tried researching but nothing has really helped.can someone please help

for starters are you sure it is 45/70 the m seams to designate the 450 marlin. other than that the gun is superb! have used a 45/70 for years for elk and has never failed. one add-on i would recommend is a limbsaver recoil pad. sorry to cut short as i could go on for hours on the marlin but have company.dst 0 -
Well, I've had mine, a stainless Guide gun, for about 3 years now. I love it, and I also have a set of AO Express sights on it, AKA peep sights. They are well made and also very fast, at least for me, to acquire and get on target. The rifle itself is pretty hgood out of the box, however I have made some modifications, I have done them all myself to save some time. First and foremost would be an action job. If you are handy and have the proper tools you can do it yourself, there are some good websites out there to help. I also installed a good recoil pad, and have plans to install a larger loop(I hunt in colder weather, wearing gloves). That I think would be a good start. If you hunt big, toothy animals, look at Corbon, Buffalo Bore, or Grizzly cartridge company for ammo. I currently shoot in mine Corbon 460 grain hardcast lead loads, I believe they are moving at around 1700-1800 FPS. Not the fastest load in the world, but it will penetrate just about anything out there, I would be comfortable taking bison, brown bear, etc with it. 0 -

You have a wonderful father, to think of purchasing something of this magnitude for you. It is a truly great rifle.
The chambering(45-70, or 450 Marlin), should be stamped ont he barrel. If it has a ghost ring rear sight, and a short 18" ported(some of the early versions were not ported) barrel, then it is a Guide gun. The Cowboy gun has a tapered octagonal barrel.
I would start out with the factory 300 grain Remingtons, and go from there.

Not sure what you are shooting for loads in your 1895CB, but that is supposed to have Ballard style rifling. That ballard style rifling loves cast bullets, much more than the jacketed. just so you know, if you don't already.
How does that Malcolm muount up on that 1895. I have been considering one for my 1886, but have to figure a way around the non-angle eject.

I have never looked thru the Malcolm. What kind of eye relief does it have? Could it be mounted so the ocular lens piece is forward of the ejection port?

The Marlin 1895G is an excellent firearm and I think that you will be very happy with it, find a reputable shooting range and inquire about classes and your on your way and later you will want to add to the collection as you become more proficient. I have the Marlin 1895CB with octagon barrel in .45-70gvt and a wm malcolm 6x telescopic sight mounted and it is very accurate, reliable and durable and the fit and finish are excellent as well, although it needs the steel buttplate to replace the plastic buttplate for posterity, the kick isn't that bad imho.
It will definitely compliment the Winchester 1886 in .45-70gvt with a side mounted wm malcolm 6x telescopic sight when I acquire it and am looking forward to it.
Also, besides accessories and customizing available for the 1895 Guide gun if interested, you may be able to order the Model 1895GBL 6 shot magazine tube from Marlin and possibly replace your 4 shot tube with it. This Model 1895GBL 6 shot tube would extend the 1895 Guide gun's magazine tube out to the end of the barrel, this may or may not require a gunsmith, but is worth looking into.
