Steryr 7mm rifle.
A friend has this rifle. The only marking we can find. Are AFFENFABRIK STERYR AUSTRIA this is on the side of the reciever. On the bottom it has a X in side a circle and the numbers 12071. It has a walnut 1/2 stock. The barrel is step down in diamater on the outside. We think it is a 7mm. Can you tell us what it may be worth and any other info.

Waffenfabrik Steyr was a large Austrian arms manufacturer that was in business for many years. They probably made hundreds of thousands of various types of military rifles during that time frame from the 1880's until the 1940's. Without quality photos its very difficult to identify the specific type of rifle. Even with photos it would be almost impossible to positively identify the cartridge the rifle is chambered for.
EDIT #1, Although it's a very nice looking rifle that someone put a lot of time, money and effort in, it's what's called "Sporterized".
These were original military rifles that have been reworked/refinished, etc as hunting rifles. Because of this their value as military collectables are gone, unfortunately. Their value would be strictly based on their cosmetic appearance as a hunting rifle.
The hole for the sling swivel in the trigger guard gives it the appearance of being originally a G 98 Mauser from the First World War, prior to it being "Sporterized".
EDIT #2, "MODEL 1912" would be the contract rifle that Steyr made for Mexico. They were based on the standard G 98 Mauser configuration, but were chambered for the military rifle cartridge used by Mexico, i.e. 7mm Mauser = 7 X 57mm.0 -
Find a gunsmith who will do a chamber casting and measure it to get an accurate assessment of the chambering. 0 -

System Mauser for sure. Under the the scope bases will be more info. Scope is way high, most likely to clear factory bent bolt not made to clear scopes. Stock looks Fajen to me. 0 -

Well I took the scope off and the front base. Nothing under it. Can't get the screws out of the back base. I don't want to mess up the screw heads. Guess I'll have to take it to a gunsmith. There is the number 71. Right back of the rear base. Does this tell us anything? 0 -
