Custom rifle around the Ruger C M?

I have been experimenting lately with a new Savage 11 in .300 WSM. The rifle has a 24" barrel. With IMR4350 and Hornady 180 BTSP I have been averaging 2996 fps per my Oehler 35P. I suspect pressures are a little high though. I think 2900-2950 fps would be a more realistic goal. In comparing cartridge drawings, it appears the RCM case has 8-9% less capacity than the WSM. With the 1 to 4 rule, the RCM cartridge should deliver only 2% less velocity than the WSM with equal bullet weights and barrel lengths.

There is no reason a .300 RCM with a 24" or even a 22" barrel wouldn't make a great elk rifle. The old .300 H&H (one of my favorite cartridges) came standard with 26" barrels. According to the shooting tests done by Guns & Ammo, the 20" barrel Hawkeye produced the same or a very little more velocity than a 24" barreled .30/06. (Of course there are no flies on a .30/06!)

But I guess if I wanted a rifle in one of the .300 short magnum cartridges I'd go with the WSM (as I have). Reasons being: not having to go the custom route to get a longer barrel and, I believe the WSM ammo and cartridge case availability will outlast the RCM and the SAUM. (I think you can still find a longer barreled SAUM yet, too.)

EDIT: I just checked and a few 22" Ruger 77's in .300 RCM are available on the auction side. I just may be tempted to try one of those!

With hornady advertising 3080 fps from superformance 180 grain, that actually puts it exactly 200 fps above the 30-06, and only 50 fps behind the 300 win mag with the exact bullets. I think with the right combination it could be a true delight. From what I saw, The gentleman I watched shooting one was having a blast with it. Hornady advertises over 3300 from a 150 grain as well. That's cooking at a boil. I like my factory ammo personally, and the WSM is a great cartridge, they just don't load superformance ammo for any of them. The 7.82 lazzeroni patriot is really the king of the short mags. Were pushing 180's at over 3190 fps. My opinion is that the 300 rcm is a very comfortable shell to fire.
    Happy shooting.
