I have an 1800's Double action Colt.
barrel has Colt.D.A.41
Black rubber grips
Numbers on frame, cylinder swing arm, and cylinder release is 988
bottom of grip frame has 12 over the numbers 213
It does have cylinder stop notches on it
Barrel dates says PAT.aug 5,84 nov.6,1888
not sure what model. 1882 or 1889.(might have numbers wrong)
value not worried about due to it was re-blued prior to my purchase.
would like to get it looked at due to the heavy action and cylinder troubles...0 -
My WAG is that it is a early manufactured, Model 1892, "New Army and Navy Model". Dating to the early 1890's, with that serial number. The SN marking on the butt was unique as you describe, with two sets of numbers one over the other. The NA & NM were made in a series starting in 1892 through 1907, consecutively serial numbered to 290,000+. 0 -
Your serial number is actually 12213. The serial numbers on the Colt New Model Army and Navy revolvers were stamped horizontally across the narrow part of the gripstrap like the SAA's so it was just a matter of space. 0 -

I dont have my handgun in front of me but...
I recall on the butt that the 12 is centered over the 213.
I will check tonight.
Oh can anyone tell me what the serial numbers mean? Thank you for the responses.0
