44 ruger finger groove sporter

Anyone have ant info on a 44mag finger groove sporter that has a williams peep sight. It's said that they made a mistake in the 60's and put a peep sight on them when they were suppose to have just a rear sight. They say there was only 6-10 made that way . Any info would be great Thanks

    In the mid to late '60's, Ruger did offer a receiver sight model.. It was the 44RS.. It wasn't a mistake.. The receiver sight was thought to have been made by Williams, but was UN-MARKED.. The elevation dovetail was milled into the side of the receiver, and there was a flush fit set screw.. There was no rear sight dovetail on the barrel.. I don't know how long they were made, or how many.. They're not that common, and there are gunsmith specials out there claiming to be originals..

    Hangfire is right, they made 'em and the sight was not marked. The Ruger .44 Carbine model "RS" or receiver sight model was made and even a few/rare mistake model "R/RS" that had both the receiver sight and the dovetail cut rear sight on the barrel. But I have never heard of or seen a Finger Groove Sporter (Model SP) with a factory installed Receiver Sight. That is not to say some were not made but it would be best to verify it with the factory before laying out big bucks.....and if it says "Williams" on the sight you can bet that it is an aftermarket application.

    I own a Ruger RS Model with peep sight but it does NOT have a finger groove stock. If you can verify from Ruger that they made a early finger grooved 44 with factory peep you indeed have a rare bird. Please call Ruger and tell us what they say.

    The Williams peep ight went in the two rear scope base holes. It was probably added to the rifle by a former owner.

    If it has the dovetail'd reciever that Hangfire referred to, then in all probability it's factory original sight and question comes down to whether that version was offered in the finger groove variation.
    As DCS mentionned, Williams made receiver sights that simply screwed into the top of the receiver in factory holes, in which case it's just a run of the mill add-on.
