wildest shot with a .22 lr?

rifle: savage mk II bolt action with heavy barrel. (100% factory rifle)
Ammo: federal bulk pack from wally world.
target: milk jug full of water
scope: simmons pos 3-9x (it was free, don't judge me. my good glass is on my other rifles)
distance: 260yds.
date: 5-6-12


I was shocked! I didn't adjust the scope for the distance. It's zeroed at about 30yds for tree rats but still hits dead on at 90yds. My range has bunkers (backstops) at 30, 60, 90, and 260 yards. I was able to see the puffs of dust on the backstop and walked em onto the target. Had to aim about 10' high to lob em in that far out. Windage was almost right on and was grouping tight enough that it would hold minute of milk jug with no problem. No wind today so that part was pretty easy. If I zeroed the scope for the distance, I could drill em all day long with no problem. I was just super impressed with the caliber. I didn't honestly think I would be able to do it. Just thought I'd share.

    Yes, it is entirely possible to do that. I regularly shoot for fun at 200 yards, with a heavily modified 10-22. A friend of mine's 8 year old son, was hitting bowling pins at 200 yards, consistantly 8-9 out of ten times, after I told him how to hold with the mil-dot reticle.

    No apology necessary. A Simmons 3-9x is perfectly fine for a .22 where you don't expect to take shots in excess of 90 yards, except for "ha ha" value.

    Its not particularly "wild", but I think my best. 22 shot was hitting a bowling pin 5 times in a row at 80 yards with an otherwise stock Smith 22A **pistol** with iron sights and the 7" bbl. Longer barrel does help!

    I did this as a short of challenge to myself, but also as a demo to a new shooter, just to how him what "could" be done with a handgun.

    I tried the same exercise at 100 yards with a cookie sheet (to represent a torso), but that shot is actually so easy its kind of boring.

    So don't let anyone tell you that you "can't" hit things at 100 yards with a handgun. If you're standing at 100 yards, you're basically a sitting duck for someone with a moderate amount of skill (or higher).

    On a good day, I can hit my 1.5" .22 "spinner" target at 25 yards gallery style (that's one hand, standing up) maybe 2/3 times. If you do that math, this isn't much harder than the bowling pin at 80 yards, but the sheer smallness of the target and the "ping"/spinning makes it seem more impressive.

    One guy I know (who is actually an ex Navy SEAL and has basically been shooting since he's been old enough to hold a gun) can toss .22 SHELLS up in the air and hit them with his .22 rifle. That's pretty impressive. His "trick shot" is to try and hit MATCH HEADS at 50+ yards with his .22 (in wind, of course) and he'll pull it off often enough that you know its not an "accident".

    At a friend's range, 180yds, can hit a 4" plate with my 1022 with a Shillen bbl and Simmons 4-12 air rifle scope, offhand.

    Once a long time ago, I participated in a night time small bore (.22) match. Only the targets were lighted. I fired a shot and went to my spotting scope to check the hit. I then adjusted to sight on the rifle to correct the hit. I looked back one more time to check the hit on the target. IT HAD MOVED!! I looked away and then came back to recheck the hit. IT HAD MOVED AGAIN!!
    I watched the target and saw the black spot move a third time. My hit was a fly crawling across the target.

    I shoot them flies and wasps off my targets if they get in the bullseye!

    14 years old. My uncle handed me his 22 rifle and said shoot that roster. (about 100 to 120 yds) Off hand aimed n the general direction and hit the roster in the head. You can't beat out house luck!

    ears ago I was doing some casual plinking in a friends back yard. A drake mallard flew over us at about 35 yards. My buddy nonchalantly raised his single six and shot. That duck dropped like a stone. I don't know who was more suprised me or him!

    While hunting woodchucks as a boy my friend and I came up onto the railroad tracks.
    Looking down the tracks on one rail was a woodchuck at approx 100 yds. A far shot for a 22 with little chance of a clean kill. My friend placed his Remington single shot 22 on the rail on the rifles' side, and began visually lining the barrel with the rail. He pulled the trigger and dropped the chuck dead. To this day I wonder if the bullet skimmed along the rail or hit dead on. Amazing.

    I did shoot a fly off my target at 50yds once. Was running several brands of ammo through a new Ultimate 10/22 I had just completed. The fly kept moving each time I fired and I finally vaporized him on the 5th shot. Went down range to confirm my "kill" and there was a light red ring around the bullet hole. That Ruger is a shooter!
