What is the difference between a Colt Trooper Mark III and the Lawman? Which one is the most valuable?

    Can someone shed some light on what it means when Colt revolvers are
    mentioned as First, second and third generation guns? I am a novice and am perticularly interested in the SAA revolvers. Any good sources recommended for research?

    When discussing Colts, the Generation thing usually refers to either Colt Percussion revolvers or Colt Single Army revolvers.
    Where Percussion revolvers are concerned, the 1st generation begins with the pistols made in Paterson, N.J in 1836 and ends with the end of Colt percussion manufacture in 1873. The second generation of Colt Percussion revolvers begins in 1970 and ends in 1981. It includes all models except the M1849 Pocket Model; beginning with the Walker originally made in 1948 to the Model 1862 Navy and 1862 Pocket Police. These guns were made from raw castings made by Uberti in Italy that were finished and assembled in the US at first by thhe Colt Hartford factory and then by a sub-contractor owened by Lou Imperato under Colt quality control supervision.
    The third generation guns were made under license in Brooklyn, New York by a Company called Colt Blackpowder Arms, Inc. This company was owned by Lou Imperato and was the successor to the company that was the sub-contractor that made the 2nd generation Colt percussion revolvers for Colt in Hartford. The management and work force were the same. These guns were manufactured from 1994 until 2002. All Hartford models were made plus the Texas Paterson revolver.

    Second Generation Colts are genuine Colts as they were made under Colt supervision and final inspection. Factory letters are also available from Colt. Third Generation, also known as the "Signature Series" which have Sam Colt's signature on the backstrap, were made under license. They are not considered "genuine" Colts by collectors and no factory letters are available.

    The Colt Blackpowder Firearms Company of Brooklyn, NY is now Henry Repeating Arms Company.

    gunandknifeman, I believe the terms 1st, 2nd and 3rd generation have a specific meaning when applied to the SAA. lst Generation being from the inception until production of the SAA was ceased at or near the beginning of WWII, 2nd Generation was from the resumption of production in about 1955 until the features were changed in the 1976-1977 time frame. Those SAA's produced after production was resumed in about 1977 are called the 3rd Generation. This is just to amplify, not dispute what steg has posted above.

    i see nothing in gunandknifemans post concerning "percussion" revolvers, he specifically asked about Colt SAA revolvers, what Mr.Herschel said is about 99% correct.
