I would like to get some information on older s&w revolvers (pre-lock) vs current revolvers. What is the difference, when did they change, which one is better, i.e. more reliable, durable, greater value, etc.

We could probably write a book answering your questions.

Actually, someone DID write a book: Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson by Supica & Nahas. I think you would enjoy reading it.

I second the big Smith book. LOTS of information. Personally, I like the older models. They also command a premium and feel absolutely smoother.

ONLY old ones for me. MIM parts leave me cold. An older S&W is better than money in the bank as a S&W should appreciate in price.

Smiths made between 1945 and 1985 are the ones to have IMHO. Variety, quality, value, and appreciation can't be beat! These seem to be the most sought after on GunBroker auctions. BT
