Marlin 1893
Besides the model B, did the Marlin have a blued receiver? I thought they were all case-hardened otherwise. There's an 1893 on GB that has a blued receiver, with a serial number that suggests it was made in 1894; the model B wasn't introduced until 1905. Is this a refinished rifle? Thanks.

As far as I know the 30-30 was never loaded with black powder from the factory. I would carefully inspect a fired 170 factory load for signs of headspace. It wouldn't be a bad plan to have it looked over and checked by your local smith. You could also shoot nice cast flat nose bullets in it for about .10 a round. The last 170 Speer's I bought were .30 each. 0
