First target shooting rifle

Hi,

I have done a little research and am thinking about getting into rifle competition. I hear a heavy barrel .223 is a good place to start. I prefer semi automatic at least to start as I know for real competition, bolt action are preferable. I am obviously looking to spend as little as possible until I know I will pursue this seriously (thus the choice for .223 as it is inexpensive to shoot). I would like some recommendations for a dependable, accurate good quality .223 semi-auto heavy barrel that will give me the best bang for the buck (pun intended) :-)

    of course your only option is an ar-15. dont know of any other semi-auto heavy barrel in .223 that can beat an ar-15s price and accessories you can put on it. dont be fooled into thinking that you need a bolt action to be accurate. there are many semi-autos that will easily out-shoot a bolt gun.

    Usually the type and style of competition determines the firearm necessary for the competition. It would be helpful for the members to know a little bit more about the type of competition which you are considering before we jump to conclusions.

    nononsense is exactly right. I think it would be well worth your while to go to a match and observe the type firing you will be competing in. You will find the shooters very willing to show you their equipment and offer advice.

    Did shoot a friends Savage benchrest style bolt action. Not expensive, but shot well enough to give an idea if you like the sport. Ammunition make a major difference in the accuracy of any rifle. Cheap military ammo may not give you an indication of either your skill or the rifles potential. Handloading would be the next step as factory match ammunition is expensive. Rolling your own is not usually cheaper as you will find yourself shooting a lot more.

    There are semi-autos that will shoot right along with the bolt guns, but don't let anyone tell you they will "out shoot a bolt gun".

    Just buy a Rock River varmint rifle and put a set of peep sights on it. They are highly competitive out of the box. HP target shooting is not a cheap sport. Buy the best equipment you can afford.
