    From what my rather old eyes can see (with squinting) is that you have a nice Win97 Trench that has had it bayonet lug removed...sad. So, my vote is still to do all you can to find the correct heat shield and go from there. Trying to modify what you have will I think, in the end, look like a modification. The heat shields are not numbered to the gun so you are ok there when you find a correct one. I am assuming that your has the "flaming bomb" or "US" on it....correct? I collect trenches and like them a lot and the Win97 is usually the "pick of the litter" (although I like my Stevens also). Others have told you that the numbers indicate that you have a real WWII weapon and I can see that you have the correct GHD (Col Guy H. Drewry) on the stock which indicates a WWII Win97. You might want to get a copy of Bruce Canfield's excellent book "Winchester in the Service" ISBN 0-917218-46-9 for more information. I see that on another thread you are trying to go for the correct heat shield...good strategy. You might check the usual mags like Gunlist and Shotgun News and just keep your eye out for local gun shows and local auctions. I got my Stevens 620 WWII Trench at a Shotgun Auction on the Eastern Shore of MD stuck in between hundreds of duck and goose shotguns. You just never know. Good luck on your quest!

    Hi - Thanks for the response. It has the US and flaming bomb on it. Other than the bayonet lug issue, the weapon is in great shape. I found a site that has a reproduction of the original heat shield/bayonet mount. Are the repro's so obviously different from the original that it is inadvisable to buy them? This place makes them to order.

    The repro's are....repro's, and a collector can tell very quickly and that alone will put your entire Win97 in question. Just start your quest now for the real deal...they are out there but you will have to work at it and it might take some time (and money). But when you are done you will have the "real deal" and something to be proud off....and very valuable to boot. It will take some time but stay the course and you will be happy with the result!
