Winchester 1890 - Bolt Jams on top of Hammer
Have rebuilt and engraved a Winchester 1890. Have run into a problem with bolt over travel. On occasion when I pull the forearm to the rear to eject a round and cock the hammer, the bolt travels to far to the rear and jams on top of the hammer. I have disassembled reassembled, realigned, and lubricated all action parts but nothing I have done has helped. Would much appreciate any suggestions. Thank you for your consideration.

I'd be looking at the fit in the area of the pump arm and the bolt. Does this happen when cycling the action empty or only when firing the rifle?0 -
when dry firing, have not live fired . 0 -
Slip a thin piece of stiff plastic (maybe a strip of index card or shim stock) between the hammer and bolt after the bolt moves about 1/3 rearward. Then continue to cycle the action. This will check if the hammer is binding on the underside of the bolt. How much play does the bolt have at the rear of the travel (vertical and lateral)? Try using thumb pressure down from the top and then from the sides in turn to counter the torque from the pump arm. A third hand would help. 0 -
When bolt travels rearward farther than it should, ie 1/3 of the bolt's length is to the rear of the hammer, the bolt is solidly jammed on top of the hammer and there is no lateral or vertical play in the bolt. Thanks for your help. 0 -
Is this a parts gun. Maybe the pump arm #37 is to long like for a WRF, or the bolt is the wrong in the slot by the arrow in #41. Did the rifle ever function correctly? I have had a 90 in 22 short. I currently have an 06, neither has ever experienced your problem. 0 -
Originally worked correctly. However, after engraving receiver and trigger were color case hardened and bolt blued. Also action does not operate as smoothly/effortlessly as before. 0 -
Just a thought but sometimes during the case color operation the metal will warp. Hope this is not your case, 0 -
I think you are going to need some hands on help to figure it out. It does sound like something got tweaked. Will the bolt slide freely in the groves in the dissembled receiver? 0 -
Bolt does not move freely in the receiver when receiver is disassembled from the trigger tang assembly. Believe Perry Shooter nailed the problem. Problem was caused by open end of Receiver "toeing in" during Case hardening. I am now returning the Receiver to vendor for rework. Thank both of you Gentlemen for your kind assistance. 0
