Thanks guys,
Don't own one and won't buy one.
Did handle one at the sporting goods store and was impressed by just how "plasticky" the gun is.
The thing really does look/feel like a "real" rifle encased by a cheesy plastic AR-15-alike toy. Given the relative quality of what's out there right now in this market segment (Umarex/Colt, Smith and Wesson, Ruger, etc) I was actually a bit surprised that Mossberg (which does sell "real" AR-15s too) put out something like that.
I'm sure the gun itself functions OK, but IMO, if you're after an AR-15 like .22 plinker, there are better ones out there for not that much more money.
If you have the coin, the best option is to get an "actual" AR-15 frame with a .22 conversion upper. Something like that can always be upgraded later, and makes the best/most realistic training tool.0 -
I have to make a comment. Myself and two of my best friends ( ages 45+)went with the mossberg carry handle 18" 10 rd , all that our gun dealer could find last December after a 6 month wait. Out of the box with Winchester wildcat 22 lr 40 gr solid nose, accurate, a few clicks with sites dead on 100 yards. I got lucky and ordered 4 25 rd mags and not one issue with mags. We have sold two of the three carry handles. We added vertical grips colored side rail covers, etc. I came across a talo edition by luck, it came home with me, found 2 flat top camo 6 position stocks 25 rd camo mags, etc, real hard to find. We got these as fun to shoot rifles, cheap for ammo and fun to shoot. We looked into the other ar 15-22 and were a true ar type rifle, but cost wise, we couldn't see spending $500 + for it. The cult following of mossbergs is crazy, and within 10 minutes of a gun show opening, my carry handle sold 350. Mossberg targeted this rifle perfect, low cost , accurate rifle. Yeh it may be a plastic cover , but looks like my M4 rifles. Everyone I show my Mossy Oak camo to , they want one. Would Mossy Oak put their name and reputation on an inferior product? I cannot answer that. If Colt, Smith & Wesson, and Mossberg had the same platform rifle, Mossberg could not compete with name recognition alone. If my 2 flat top rifles are anything like the carry handle rifle, then I still have no issues, except a small phillips screw driver and an allen wrench set. I would like to see sales figures on the 22 market since December 2012. One note, the flattops with sites are plastic, but they are adjustable and removable for optics. 0 -
Thanks for all the replies guys. I'll show them to my son this weekend. 0
