Mine starts with AAB, and I bought it new in 1980. 0 -
Smith went to Alpha Numeric serialization. With the 3 letters prefix in the early 80's. This has caused great confusion over the years.
Per the data in my reference,(SCSW). I believe your 686, was made in the latter part of 1983.0 -

1980 seems too early to have purchased a 686.
I have not seen one with a pinned barrel.0 -
AAB8587.
Might have been 1981. I bought it from a police supply when I worked at the Camden, AR police department.0 -

According to, SCSW. The first use, of the three letter code serialization, was in 1980. With "AAA", 0000 to 2100.
Nunn's 686, would date to 1981.
Kind of interesting. Might be some out there, with pinned barrels?0 -
I talked to someone at S&W and they just told me it was manufactured in 2001. That doesn't sound right. 0 -

According to, SCSW. In 2001, the 686's were up to, the "-6" engineering change. The "-5", was in 1997.0 -
I asked the woman I talked to if she was sure of the DOM and she told me yes. If I wanted history of the gun it would be 75.00 and I would get a letter from S&W. 0 -
My 629 no dash is P&R DOM 1980.
Also have a 27-2 that is P&R DOM 1982.
I just thought any Smith made before 83 or 82 would be pinned.
Not sure.
Sounds like SW may have ushered in the dropping of these 2 desirable features with the model 686.
I do really like the L frame though.0
