Strange clip on ww2 style ammo can....Edited
Went by a local gunshop today and picked up a 30 cal ammo can that is the older ww2 style. Funny thing is the end had an extension on it that had a spring loaded lever in it. Some kind of special mounting or something I guess. Any ideas on where to look for info? Or anyone here know what it was for?
EDIT: Charlie, Trap, and Militaryguy all nailed it. The can is the M1A1 can. Thanks for the help everyone!
Now, how much is this thing worth? Should I try to sell it, or just use it as a regular ammo can.....think i'll list it on GB and let someone else get it that can actually use it.

The can is likely for belt fed machinegun ammo. The thing on the end is to keep the ammo coming out of the can in an orderly fashion. 0 -
A pic would help or a more complete description.
Maybe here if you scroll down.

This is the closes thing I could find by googling. It looks like a separate part of the mount, though. Not part of the ammo can.

This style can also fits in armored fighting vehicles in the storage racks to prevent loose can from flying about. 0
