M1A Scout Sniper Rifle
I'm really interested in one of these. I'm not crazy over the front scope/red dot mounting on the front hand guard. Can the front hand guard be replaced with a conventional one and then use a regular scope mount that was designed for all the other M1A's ???
I just love the one pictured below and it belongs to one of the members here. I also see that he replaced his hand guard.

You can easily remove the mount from the barrel and replace the handguard with a usgi handguard. I recommend a ARMS 18 scope mount, they are low, solid and trouble free. You can still see the iron sights also.[:)] 0 -
armilite,
The ARMS 18 mount is fairly simple/compact in design but a tad expensive for just a cast piece.
This is an alternative albeit slightly bigger and a little more complex in design. It attaches without any trouble or complexities.
The Troy M14 BattleRailT :

Yes even a little more expensive than the ARMS 18 but there is more offered if you think you can use the design. If not, go simple.

Please take a look here sadlak.com
I have one of their mounts on my m1a,
It is a very good mount available in several styles/materials
and price points. They are great people to deal with,
and you will maintain the classic look of your wood stocked rifle.0 -
I have the M1A Scout and removing the forward mount is easy, as is replacing the handguard. The Springfield Armory stock is fairly chunky, I replaced it with a Fulton Armory (made by Boyds) slim style stock and wood handguard. I like the result much better.
I owned a Sadlak mount, it worked fine. I went with the ARMS 18 because it sits lower, looks like it's part of the gun and not an aftermarket afterthought.
I mean this half joking, but shooting a scope mounted M1A means you always have a built in excuse for a lousy day at the range - 5" groups @ 100 yds can be dismissed with "must be a loose mount" and everyone at the range will nod in agreement. [;)]
From time to time I think it would have been best to keep the forward mount set up, although I do like my current set up using the ARMS and an old Redfield.0 -
I think Ultimak make one that replaces the whole heat shield in to a pic. rail. 0 -
The Springfield M1A Scout rifle without the forward mount is (or was) referred to as a "Bush Rifle" by Springfield Armory.
I don't know if they still offer them in that configuration but about 10 years ago, that was what they were called.0 -

You are correct and I don't think they are available any more.0 -
I have removed the forward scope mounting rail and handguard from my Scout and replaced it with a standard handguard.
Removing the forward scope rail actually improved the accuracy just a bit, something to do with barrel harmonics.
I have a Bassett Machine standard Picatinny mount which allows you to use the irons with the scope mounted.
You'll need to get an adjustable cheek riser so it can be raised for the scope and lowered for the irons.
I have a Tacpro adjustable cheek riser.
The low Bassett Picatinney mount will get the scope lower and not require a riser.
The Bassett mounts are easy on, easy off and will return close to zero when remounted.
The Bassett mounts are recommended by many M1A/M14 owners on the M14 forum.0
