Varnish removal

I've got an old rifle in very good shape, except somewhere along the line, someone varnished the stock. It has fine checkering at the pistol grip.

It annoys me to no end. Is it possible to have the varnished removed with out damaging the checkering. I'd rather leave it as is as opposed to wrecking it.

    Any help appreciated. Thanks

Acetone and a rag. Use in a well ventilated area.

Get a good finish remover from a paint store or woodworking shop. Rags should be ok for most of it but use a medium stiff brush in the checkering areas. Rags might dull the tips and won't reach down in.

I've always liked Formby's Finish Remover. Easy to use and won't harm the patina on the wood.

Thanks for the input. I'll look at the options and give it a go. Hopefully I won't stuff it up

I like the Formby's Refinisher- but it IS toxic and flammable as hell. Use in a well vented area with NO sources of ignition (like pilot lights) and DO wear gloves. Mainly acetone, toluene and methanol.

Use a marine/aircraft stripper. Apply and wrap it in plastic so it doesn't dry out and let it work longer. Use plastic bristle brushes and it'll come right out of the checkering. Use laquer thinner for cleaning it up and the laquer thinner will also pull any oils out of the wood.
