I purchased this M70 .222 Rem. bolt action rifle (mfr. model no.: G7068) new, so it's a 1-owner gun and is in the same unused, unfired (except for factory test-firing) condition as when it left factory. Was manufactured by Winchester Repeating Arms Company (pre-U.S. Repeating Arms/pre-FN Herstal/Browning ownerships). According to Winchester's Web site's (under "Customer Service") Model 70 serial numbers/year of manufacture chart (page 30), this rifle was made in 1977. The .222 Remington cartridge was used for many years by benchrest/competitive shooters because of its superb, renowned accuracy. In 1967, Winchester added the .222 Remington chambering to the Model 70 line. Compared to other various chamberings in the Model 70 line, comparatively few Model 70s were made in .222 Remington.

Ok, I didn't realize that I had to explain my wording. "what period " means when did they introduce the caliber and when did they discontinue it. The span of time that the .222 was being produced by Winchester in the Mod. 70 , in years.

According to the Blue Book, Winchester made them in their standard Model 70, between 1964 and 1980. US Repeating Arms after thy took over in the early 80's. Made short runs of .222, in a number of different models. Until they went out of business in 2006.

I do not see any value of your unwarranted answers to a real question. I am sure they did not just make it in the year of 1977, and the poster asked the range of which it was made. I might suggest that you really do not know it all, even though you think you might. If this is what you idea of help is, then help yourself to the General Discussion forum, as you are no expert(nor amateur) at much of anything.

    EDIT 1:

The Blue Book says they were made from 1964 to 1980, in 222 Remington. This will be the push feed action, not the controlled round feed, Mauser claw type extractor action. I do not know of any data of how many were made in that era...possibly Bert H, might be able to give you a hand with that.

I grew up with a .222 Remington. Great caliber, way better than the .223 in my opinion. A shame to let a Model 70 in .222 go unfired!!

I just bought a Mod 70 in .222 Rem. According to the serial number it was made in 1977. Does anyone know how many of these rifles were made and what period they were made ?

Is it a long or short action? A long action will have a big spacer in the back of the magazine. You can't load a case right up to the bolt when it's pulled all the way back.

If it's a short action it's post 1984...I believe. I had a heavy barrel in a short action.

    All push feed of course.

It is a long action with the spacer. Has a sporter wt. barrel. It is much more accurate than I thought it would be. Love it.
