The FS was made in response to some failures of the 92F slide which caused it to separate behind the front sight area and allow the rear portion of the slide to fly rearward into the shooter's face. When our department was considering authorizing the 92F this information came out. I made contact with the U.S.M.C. MP training facility at Lackland AFB and spoke to the command range master. He confirmed that he had witnessed one 92F fracture as described and strike the MP trainee in the cheek breaking the cheekbone and a few teeth. The investigation revealed that the slide had been cracked when it was blued as the finish was inside the fracture line. At that point the Corps required that all 92f models be magnafluxed every 1000 rounds. The Beretta company machined a groove in the underside of the portside slide rail and put a large steel disc on the head of the hammer axle to mate with the groove. The groove tapers to zero to trap any slide that fails by jamming it with the steel disc.

As it doesn't add to the complexity of the manual of arms for the 92 and does provide that extra bit of safety, I would be inclined to lean to the FS.

seal teams upgraded to 92fs' and I noted the fs had that 3rd rail/groove.

    whats better than the fs?

well, the seals dumped the fs and got 226's.
