Winchester Model 70 Pre-War
The serial number on my Winchester Model 70 dates the rifle to 1941. Out of curiosity, I removed the barrel from the stock to see what date markings are visible. The barrel is stamped 1906 with 41 below it. This confirms that the gun is from 1941 but what is the 1906 stamp for? Thanks in advance.

Let me guess, the caliber is .30-06, right?
My M70 Target is a 1942 serial number but with a 1955 barrel. I have heard of others like that. Receiver left on shelf through two wars and not assembled until 1955? Factory replacement barrel?0 -
Right, it is a 30-06. The 41 stamped on the underside confirms it is a 1941 gun barrel, right? Serial numbers on bolt and receiver match and date to 1941. I am confused about the 1906 being stamped above the 41. The very few other rifles I have seen just had the date stamp on the underside of the barrel. 0 -
I don't pretend to know anything about Model 70's.
The rifle is a 30-06 right?
30-06 means 30 Caliber developed/adopted(whatever, or previously 1903) in 1906.......
41, right? I would assume the barrel is from 1941.
Keep in mind, Winchesters have been made to look like what they are not (or never were)for 60-70+ years!0 -
Gearheaddad,
