My Winchester 92/65 Delema
I just got a model 92 s/n 445695 but the barrel is marked Model 65 and .218 Bee. The owner thinks the gun went back to Winchester to be re-barreled so is there any way to tell if in fact that is the case? Any markings anywhere?? Barrel reads: winchester proof steel MODEL 65 Winchester -trade mark- 218 BEE on left side. On the right side: made in the USA winchester repeating arms company -new haven,conn-
It's a good tight rifle with good wood but of course the value is greatly affected by the barrel swap I would think. Thank you, Ricci.

Ricci,
While it is remotely possible that it was rebarreled by Winchester, the odds are very high against it. The first thing I would do is check the barrel date, as that will tell you when the barrel was manufactured (and the earliest possible year that it could have been installed). In my experience, when Winchester installed a replacement barrel, it was always correctly marked for the Model it was being installed on... in other words, they would not have left the Model "65" marking on the barrel.0 -
Good enough for me. Thank you Sir!! 0 -
Hello,
If the barrel has an "oval P" proof stamp on it, in addition to the standard W/P Winchester Proof mark that should match the one on the receiver then the barrel was not replaced at the factory.

I have seen a barrel marked Model 65 218 Bee on a Model 92 - assumed it was rebarreled factory or custom. Winchester did make the most use of available parts (e.g., the interchange of barrels and bolts between the Model 54 and 70 rifles - there are some 70's with 54 marked barrels and even 54's with 70 bolts). 0 -
I have seen a 92 with a218 bee barrel marked win 65. Also the breech block had a smaller firing pin than the usual 92s that I have seen.
Just my observation.0
