flea market ammo ID?
bought some ammo at the local flea market in boxes marked Century Arms Inc. they are labeled 7mm rifle, and for components only. headstame is P S 1920.
these look like 7mm mauser cart and are in very good shape. have a FMJ brass colored bullet. is there any reason not to shoot these as is? thought i got a good deal at $4.00 per box of 20.

There are 4 different manufacturers that make cartridges with a "PS" headstamp. My WAG, being the ammo is 7 mm Mauser, FMJ. Is that this is the correct one. "Pirotecnia Militar de Sevilla, Sevilla, Spain"
If 1920 is the DOM, and from Spain. It will be corrosive and subject to misfires. That would be the reason, it is labeled "for components only".
I wouldn't waste your time, on even trying to fire this stuff. Break it down, for the bullets. It would have Berdan Mercuric primers. So I wouldn't even use the brass, for reloading.0 -
OK :
Varian : if U will list this stuff ? I am interested ???
Please advise :
Thanks !!!0 -
If the bullets are the 175 grain ones, they are great for 1893 Mausers.
Tore down a bunch years ago and they worked well in a 93 long rifle and a 95 carbine.0 -
I would expect lots of duds and more scary hang fires. As kid back in the late 60's I shot up a sack of match 30-06 from 1918?. One dud for sure and the rest were a full 7 seconds delay from striker drop to full power discharge. The dud was full of green slime looking stuff. Didn't look inside any of the loaded ones.
Check the bullets with a magnet, they could be plated steel. Mercury will kill brass - not sure it would leach out of un-fired primers. Good 7mm Mauser brass shouldn't be that hard to find or make IMHO.0 -
Cupro nickle bullets, and what Rufe said about the primers.
Best case, they're all duds, and I say that with reason. Worse case, the ones that do go bang, rupture the primer. The ones with brass primers are certain to let go.
Sold a nice 7mm Brazilian 1908 Mauser to a guy that had a bunch of that ammo. Too stupid to stop after the first primer rupture, he kept shooting until the bolt wouldn't open. The hot plasma melted the firing pin tip, and destroyed the bolt face/firing pin hole.0 -
Yes, you got a good deal. I would list them on GunBroker and let a collector buy them. Some folks like to have some old ammo to display with an old gun.
Then you can use the proceeds of the ammo sale to buy some fresh 7 m/m ammo if you want some to shoot.0
