Shipping U.S. R Johnson pistol
Quick question. Not being an FFL can I ship this
Model 1836 via the USPS Priority Mail without breaking
any laws? I know cap and ball antiques can be shipped almost
anywhere in the U.S. without an FFL. Want to lower the
shipping price if I can ship it via the USPS.
Thank you all for your expert Advice.

It is an antique flintlock so yes, you can mail it to anyone legally able to receive it. 0 -
Actually it isn't a flintlock. This is one of the conversions
to percussion. But it is still an antique being manufactured in 1844.0 -
There was a article in the American Rifleman. A number of years ago. Regarding a gentleman getting in trouble. Because he had a antique muzzle loading pistol in his vehicle. This was in, the great state of New Jersey. He beat the rap, but it cost him a bundle. With lawyers etc.
Because of this. I would be wary, shipping The Johnson muzzle loader. To any of the commie states. Like NJ, NY, MA, etc. If they can charge a guy, for having a muzzle loader in his glove compartment. Probably throw the book at you, for shipping it threw the mail.0 -
yep got to watch the states on the far ends of the county 0 -
The question was can the US Mail be used to mail an antique pistol. This is covered in the Domestic Mail manual, and the answer is yes. It distinguishes between firearms and ANTIQUE firearms. This is how the DMM defines an ANTIQUE firearm:
431.3 Antique Firearm
Antique firearm means any muzzle loading rifle/shotgun/pistol, which is designed to use black powder or a black powder substitute, and which cannot use fixed ammunition (except those that incorporate a firearm frame or receiver, any firearm which is converted into a muzzle loading weapon, or any muzzle loading weapon which can be readily converted to fire fixed ammunition by replacing the barrel, bolt, breechblock, or any combination thereof); or any firearm (including those with a matchlock, flintlock, percussion cap, or similar type of ignition system) manufactured on or before 1898, or any replica thereof, if such replica:
Is not designed or redesigned for using rimfire or conventional centerfire fixed ammunition.
Uses rimfire or conventional centerfire fixed ammunition that is no longer manufactured in the United States and is not readily available in the ordinary channels of commercial trade.0 -
New Jersey requires ANY blackpowder firearm to be shipped to an FFL dealer. NY State allows them to be shipped directly to the buyer EXCEPT in the five boroughs of NY City.
Check state and local laws before you ship. However, it would be the buyer who's responsible, not you, unless you knowingly violate that state's laws.0
