Haven't had one apart in years. Needing to come back 1/6" more is a lot. I think the lever cams the pin back a little as it locks. So perhaps the lever is worn and/or pin is worn at that engagement surface plus the sear might not be holding the pin back far enough to start with. That's where I'd start looking.

lots of google hits for model 70 safety issues

YOUR GUNSMITH SHOULD BE ABLE TO FIX THIS (NO PARTS NEEDED). ANY WEAR TO ANY OF THE WORKING PARTS (TRIGGER PIN, SEAR, COCKING PIECE) CAN CAUSE THIS. JUST A MATTER OF 'RE-FITTING' THE WORKING SURFACES.

    Thanks all.
    Got it going.

Real rough surface where the safety cams on cocking piece.
Some 600 grit paper and a dab of grease, and all is well.

Had not noticed before, I was concentrating on the wrong area.

Not too bad for a $200.00 Winchester Model 70.

Well done. I almost bought a super grade one many years ago and it was closer to $500 back then. $200 today for yours was a great deal.
