What do The Chevrons and Bars mean on a sleeve of A General Officer In WWII?

The bars signify six months service overseas during WWII while the chevrons signify 6 months overseas service during WWI. Photograph's of George Patton in his dress uniform have these symbols on the sleeve. 0 -

Thanks! On a similar ancient vein, did you know stars (pentagram) were on Washington'sir name shield in England and The Chevron was on Stafford's sir name Shield also? These symbols have crossed over into The U.S.Miltary among others across the world in my estimation.

FWIW, the chevron is one of the earliest marks in heraldry- if you go back to Sparta, the Spartans used a chevron on their shields. It was a capital letter lambda. 0
