case Hardening
What was/is the reason for case hardening instead of through hardening? Just a curiosity.

Would some body please me the difference between Case Color and Case Hardening. I have read about using bone and other materials under high heat with gun parts to obtain the color . Would case color be like a powder coat? I was looking at a hand gun that was suppose to be case hardened but it was wearing off pretty bad and I was told it was a case color. 0 -
My understanding is that the "case coloring", is a cosmetic process only. It makes the surface appear, to have been case hardened. But it actually hasn't been.
I vaguely remember seeing it done on a video. With a guy putting some substance, on the surface of the steel. Than heating/burning it with a propane torch.0 -
You actually have..
Case Hardening- Surface is only hardened for strength..
Color Case Hardening- Hardening done for strength, and to impart decorative color.. Different materials/chemicals used in the heating process..
Case Coloring- Use of chemicals/ dyes/heat used to simulate Color Case Hardening..Some fake Case Coloring is simply 'Painted' on, then clear-coated..0 -
Case hardening refers to hardening the surface of steel (that may not contain sufficient carbon to be hardened) by soaking in a carbon-containing medium at high temp. The depth of the hard case (skin) is controlled by length of time in the medium. Rapid cooling of the part by quenching in water or oil produces the hard case, which may need to be softened (tempered) somewhat by heating to a lower temp., reducing brittleness. Color is produced by introducing various substances to the medium, an art form practiced by specialists. There are many variations to these processes. 0 -

The 30-40 Krag, Springfield Model 1892, and model 1898, are examples of rifles that were case hardened. 0 -
Ruger Vaqueros are case colored. 0 -
Actually it was a Ruger I was looking at that a lot of the case color was already gone, not a old gun. 0 -
I think that paint on case color is a very poor excuse for a gun finish as just good bore cleaner will strip it off in short order. 0
