1972, In 1977, the engineering change, from -3 to -4. relocated the gas ring from yoke to the cylinder.

    -3 to -4 change occurred in 1977.

It was a manufacturing change moving the gas ring from the yoke ("crane") to the front of cylinder.

That's a little metal ring in front of the cylinder that's supposed to help block burned propellant gas from getting into the cylinder axis and binding it from fouling. Like most of these "dash" changes the move here was largely a cost saving maneuver.

Gas ring on the cylinder is the original design and probably the better one. The change in 1977 was a reversal of moving of gas ring from the cylinder to the yoke, which happened only a few years before.

edit: If this 15-3 revolver was manufactured in 1972 it probably has the gas ring on the cylinder already. . .its basically mechanically no different than a 15-4.
