New England SB1 .410 barrel not locking up good.
HELLO. I JUST PICKED UP A NEW ENGLAND SB1 .410 SHOTGUN. PROBLEM IS WHEN CLOSING THE BARREL TO SECURE IT SHUT IN THE RECEIVER IT WILL NOT LOCK SECURELY SOMETIMES. IF YOU CLOSE IT FAST AND HARD IT SEEMS TO STAY SHUT. BUT IF YOU CLOSE IT NORMALLY AND THEN PUSH DOWN ON THE BARREL IT WILL SOMETIMES OPEN BACK UP. I HAVE TRIED TO DO SOME RESEARCH ON HOW TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM WITH NOT VERY MUCH LUCK. FROM WHAT I HAVE FOUND OUT IS THERE IS A BARREL CATCH AND LOCKING PIN THAT MAY BE BAD? SO I AM LOST AND STUCK. SO PLEASE ANY HELP OR FEEDBACK ON HOW TO CORRECT THIS PROBLEM WOULD BE GREAT APPRECEATED. THANKS, GARY

Per your description. Seems to be a potentially serious safety problem. Wouldn't even attempt to repair it. Send it back to NEF/Marlin for repair. Legal liability is a big thing, with all firearms manufacturers nowadays.
GOOGLE, "NEF", to find a customer service number. Contact them by phone or e-mail. Regarding, returning for repair.0 -
I think they are now H&R1871. I doubt they will fix NEI stuff under warranty. A real local gunsmith should be able to fix it.

I'd be looking at part #2 for burrs or miss-assembly and the cut in the bottom of the barrel where it fits.

try cleaning inside the receiver, remove the forend then remove barrel, check inside receiver then clean, I like to use wd-40 aerosol spray to clean out then dry and put a drop or 2 of gun oil on the barrel latch inside receiver, replace barrel and operate several times, then put back together and see what happens.

might need a bit of the file on the barrel lip not on the lock lug as it was hardend 0 -
They used to say that these single shot barrels needed to be fit to the receiver, particularly if you desired multiple barrels. If this is not the original factory barrel the fit may be a little off. Factory or gunsmith probably the best bet. 0 -
I own about a dozen NEF / H&R / Pardner single shot break open shotguns
I have found them to be well made and reliable
The only problem I ever had was I sheared off the bbl lug that is used to attach the forearm
We had a wooden crate with a few hundred mixed 12 gauge shells of all vintages and varieties and loads in it and were having a fun day at the range shooting them off
The company fixed it for no charge under its warranty - good as new
I suspect it was a manufacturer flaw in the weld - certainly unexpected
What harm can it do to call customer service and just ask
You might get surprised
