What is this Boss Thing For?
I live in WI and do not need much of a rifle over my 30-06s. On a whim a couple years ago I bought a Thompson & Center Venture on GB, NIB, in .300 Win Mag. I guess I bought to say I had a 300. The price after a $50 rebate was $250. Figured I could not go wrong. I just bought what I thought was a medium priced Nikon ProStaff BDC scope. At the rifle range I have been just blown away on the accuracy of this relatively inexpensive rifle, it is a tack driver! It hits the bull at 200 yards easily and with that thick barrel seems to do it consistently. I am very pleased with it.
Last spring I was visiting my best friend back in our hometown in Michigan. He asked me to help catalog his guns that he had acquired over the years at all the garage and estate sales he frequents. Most of the rifles we looked at were .22 rimfires. In an upstairs bedroom I pulled out a black case and opened it. Expecting to see another .22 I was surprised to see a Model 70 Winchester in 300 Win Mag. It was stainless steel and has a black synthetic stock and a Redfield Scope. On the Barrel it says, Classic Stainless Boss. It does have a device in the end of the barrel that looks like a flash suppressor / muzzle brake. My friend asked me if I wanted it as he had forgot he even had it. I asked him how much and he said, ?I owe you $200 for our deposit on our Canada Fishing Trip so just give me another $200.? I did not need another 300 but I thought it looked cool and if it shot as good as my Venture I would sell that so I said I would take it.
Well I get home and try to sight in at the range and I cannot get the thing set right. I have shot 4 boxes of shells though it. I just cannot get it to come in. I make all the adjustments and the bullets fly in different places then where they should. I took it to my gunsmith and he said the scope may be bad and/or the ?Boss? throws everything off. He advised a good scope and to cut the Boss off. The Boss has numbers on it like a micrometer. How do you sight the gun in with two things to adjust? I am thinking I need to get another good scope for it but this Boss thing throws another variable in. Do you set the Boss at 0 and just sight in the scope? Why does it need this Boss thing anyways? The gunsmith said it just sells ammo. He seems to be right so far. I cannot seem to find out anything about it on the Winchester site. Flustered in Wisconsin!

I just found something called "Setting the Sweet Spot" on your Winchester Model 70 Boss. 0 -
the Boss was designed to allow the owner to adjust for the best groups with each different brand and weight of bullet but most people don,t want to spend the time & money top shoot hundreds of rounds of ammo to TRY to get a tighter group in my opinion the only people that ever liked the Boss was the ammo makers maybe if you reloaded you may tweak the boss to see how your rife acted 0 -
"I have shot 4 boxes of shells though it."............you've only got another 6 boxes to go(and several cleanings) before the barrel is 'broke in'. The boss is for those anal retentive types that just have to 'have the best' (group size). If you don't reload your ammo it is a waist of time, set it and forget it [;)] 0 -
BOSS= Balistic Optomized Shooting System....IIRC. Before you have it cut off let me know. My LGS has a bunch of the BOSS CR's (or Conventional Recoil) laying around for super cheap. I can see if he has the correct one and make an auction for you. That way you can just unscrew the BOSS and put the CR on there to keep it all factory original. They can be a pain to adjust though.... 0 -

Always bore sight your scope to your rifle.
The BOSS is a tuning attachment. It's supposed to come with the super secret book of settings designed for various cartridges and bullet weights. Look up your load and set the proper number on the BOSS and go shoot. The booklet also gives you guidance as to which way to go with the tuning depending on where it shoots on the target in relationship to the bullseye.
When in doubt, call to ask for a copy of the book.
Best.
ADDED:
And by the way, it does work and can work quite well when the barrel is up to the task.
Best.0 -
Basically it is a device (adjustable muzzle weight) that allows you to slightly tune it to optimize the barrel harmonics, etc. to increase accuracy for a given load.
If you look at rimfire benchrest shooters, they will often use a tuner or weight, possibly sliding it up and down hte barrel, to do the same.
Go read that article about setting the sweet spot - it will tell you all about the process.0 -

You need to consider getting a different gunsmith.

The system works. Get the book, It will give you a start point, adjust the BOSS to the bullet weight. It does take time. Without the book, you will have problems. My 7mm mag shoots under an inch with proper adjustment. Different bullet weighs have different settings and there seems to be no rhyme or reason between them. Good luck. The scope could be a problem. I had a Leupold that would not group.. I returned it to factory. They said it was in spec. I put a Kales on my rifle, it shot wonderfully well. Only Leupold I ever had a problem with. 0 -
I have two model 70's with a boss system...both are highly accurate...it works! You need the book....you stole it at 400.00... mine do have high end scopes(Swarovskis)..If you need any advise you can contact me on the Gen. forum...love to help you... 0
