One More Mexican Mauser Question
Everything I find says Mexican Mausers are small ring. One person on my other thread stated they are large ring. I hardly ever visit this site and am having trouble replying. Anyway, any replies greatly appreciated

It depends on the year/model.. Look at yours-on the left side, notice the "Step" at the transition from receiver ring to the action side rail.. There is no step on a Small Ring..1910 and 1936 Mexican Mausers are Small Ring..
Hoosier has an excellent description on his site..

I think your 1924 is a large ring.
All the old 7mm Mausers and the rolling blocks I have shot all had large chambers that made neck sizing only not a good option. I'm not sure if they were cut large for military purposes or that the current standards for brass has change.0 -
Thank you sirquote:Originally posted by charliemeyer007

Hard to measure from a photo..Besides, who needs to measure to tell if it's a Large or Small ring?

bvshooter, the one in your pic is a 98 Large Ring action.
The step just in front of the script on the left receiver rail shows that. On a small ring action, the front receiver ring would be level with the left receiver rail, where the lettering is.
The bolt shroud also has a gas shield that the small rings don't have.
Just to get things confused, there are Small Ring 98 actions too. There are also Large Ring 98 action, that have Small Ring barrel threads.
