winchester 70 acuracy
i have a old win. model 70 that doesn't want to group anymore. have tried everything I can think of from different scope retightening the mounts and rings. extream slow fire off bags, bi-pod, led sled still cannot get a tight three shot group out of it like it use to. at 100 yard it use to cloverleaf a three shot group now lucky to get a 2 to 3 inch group. the rifle is chambered in .7mm any help would be appreciated thank you

Crap build up in the barrel? Stock warped and touching the barrel?
I'd more worried about the stock to action being loose than the scope being th problem.0 -
thanks i have not checked the stock yet don't think its build up gave it one hell of a cleaning caus that was my second guess will lool in to the stock though thank you very much 0 -

How old is your rifle? Is it a PRE-64'? Which 7mm round is it? 7x57, or 7mm Remington Magnum? There is a whole bunch of stuff that can be addressed.

What type of ammo, same lot as shot before?
Reloads? Could just be it does not like the brand ,weight,
load, or type of bullet you are now using.
How many rounds and what is a good cleaning?
The barrel may have excessive copper build up
It might need an overnight soaking in a good
copper cleaner and more elbow grease.
And some barrels erode , or pit faster then others.
Check the muzzle ,
a slight nick or ding in the crown can adversely effect accuracy0 -
Might sound funny, but try backing off (less tight) the forend stock screw a little. It sometimes makes a difference. Sounds like there might be more at play here though. Still, might as well try everything till you find it. Good luck 0 -
i use a solvent that you can't leave for more than 5mins. run a brush and then patch till dry then go back with a good oil to protect. It is a .7mm rem mag. It is just after 64 65-67 in that area. I have been shooting winchester 175 gr soft tip powerpoints, have been for years and have gotten outstanding groups with just those factory loads. After you check the stock, and if it still doesn't shoot up to standard, you might bring it in to a gunsmith and see if he can check the crown for you.
If the crown is trued and it still won't shoot, you might try looking into a new barrel. Of course a good bedding job along with that will help.0 -
Sometimes them quickie bore cleaners will not get er dun!
To see if the bore is copper fouled, get some Hoppes #9 Benchrest Bore cleaner, some white 7mm cleaning patfchs, a 7mm bore brush!
Wet a patch with the hoppes, remove the bolt and run in through the bore from the chamber end, then wet the 7mm bore brush, and run it through about 10 times. Stand the gun in a corner with the barrel down on a while cloth. Look at the white cloth next day and see if you see any green/Blue. run a clean white patch through the bore and look for Green/Blue which is a indicator of copper fouling. If you are seeing GR/B colors keep soaking resting for 24 hrs and cleaning until the color becomes just white.
Also make sure the center stock screw on the model 70 is just snug, not tight.
Are you reloading for the rifle or shooting factory ammo and if factory ammo, try different brand with same 175 gr bullet weight.??
Also just try 3 shot groups and pay attention to where the first cold bore shot strikes from day to day!
Has the action been glass bedded to the stock and the barrel freee floated????
What is the brand name of the scopes you have tried???
Shooting the mag in a lead sled is similiar to placing the gun butt against a concrete wall and firing, no give and can result in cracked stocks. Use a sissy bag and fire the gun yourself without the sled or get your wife or girl friend to test fire the gun!0 -
soak it overnight with "wipeout" bore foam. Then patch it out and try it again. That 5 minute stuff doesn't have long enough to dissolve copper properly. 0 -
I have a few Winchester in 7 mag. and the most important thing you must look for is barrel clearance. If you can not slide a dollar bill up the stock after shooting a few rounds ( 5 or more) then your stock is too close. Next, Winchesters don't have to be absolutely clean to shoot perfect. They are one of a few that don't mind having some build up in the barrel and still shoot clover leafs. Actually, when I shoot 200 yard bench rest, I will shoot better with a dirty bore than a clean bore. Most Winchester shooters will tell you the same thing. Don't over clean the bore. The last thing that would make it not group tight is the rifling is shot out in the barrel. 7 mag. is a hot round and will eat up riffling in the last 2 inches of the barrel. I have more than one model 70 in 7 mag. that it has had to have the last 2 inches of the barrel removed and recrowned. Good luck and don't over think your problem, some of it could be operator error.[:D] 0
