Does that disqualify it as C&R?

  I wouldn't worry about engraving. If the gun was C&R before, still is.
  
  I have a long range "sniper" rifle built on a 1944 Mauser action, with a custom stock, 1 inch heavy barrel, 10x scope.
  Even thro the gun serial numbers on the action quaifiy it as C&R, it
  is NOT.

  That's a great question, probably a good one to submit to BATFE for a decision letter.
  
  In recent years, they have been more liberal in accepting modified guns. It seems that, as long the gun could have been in the present configuration originally, they are OK with it. They have approved guns with modern replacement parts and telescopic & adjustable sights that are modern.
  
  Personally, I would ship a 50+ year old Colt SAA that had recently been engraved without hesitation, but not an M1 Garand with similar embellishment. Others will think otherwise.

  I agree 100% Assuming the "Engraved Colt" is still in it's original factory configuration. Barrel length, caliber, etc......

  Call local ATF off an ask most are very helpful. then have them send you a written notice. Has worked for me on a dew firearms
