Dog was in distress last night,
(Consequently, so was I.) He was shaking his head and flapping his ears repeatedly, in obvious distress. [:(] he finally got off the bed around 2am. He came back in when I called him. He ran his head and his bad ear up against my hand on the edge of the bed. I gently ran my index finger down his ear canal, which is what he seemed to want. It came away wet. Not smelling bad (infected, or blood) just wet. I was concerned.
He continued shaking his head although not quite as bad, most of the night. I was planning on using an ear bulb to irrigate his ear with warm soapy water and perhaps some hydrogen peroxide this am. I looked down his ear canal with a flashlight this morning, expecting to see a build up of dirt, or perhaps a tick. Instead, I could see where he had had a large blister in his ear canal, that my index finger had broke, hence the fluid.
I just a little while ago, coated his ear canal with some Burn Cream (for welding burns) containing Lidocaine and anti- biotics on my pinkie finger. He seemed most appreciative.
I hate when my Buddy is in distress. [V]
Such a good dog.

I just went through this with my young dog
I used a wash rag to clean as far as I could then several tips. I then applied a cream the vet had given me
don't be afraid to use a q tip. the tube of cream the vet gave me has a 1.5 " tip. I asked how far down should I insert it all the way he replied
just use common sense0 -
Sounds like you take really good care of him,and have this under control. You're very aware of his needs and changes. He in turns lets you know when he's not feeling good. That a great match. Hope he heals up quickly. 0 -
tried to stuff down a worm med in our largest rescue buddy....ohhh no...that didn't fly...she is still laying out under the pickup and i will have to chop it up and hide it in supper ....little buddy is easy but bigger one has to many choppers and don't like that..luv em both 0 -
sounds like you taking care of him
our latest rescue dog picked up a ear infection a couple months back
last year our husky had one . we feel bad for them even or Shepard has had them . if I get a warm washcloth they know and will lean into it while I clean out there ears
the vet always provides us some drops that clear it up in a few days to a week ,
like a itch you cant reach i am sure it frustrating to them also0 -

I would cut up a hot dog and stuff the pill in one of the pieces. Give him one and if he begins to chew it, give him another so he'll swallow the first. I usually hide the pill in the 3rd piece.0 -
it's warm and moist in there. watch out for infection. keep up with the antibiotics.
dogs have a natural antibiotic in their ears. that's why a dog with a depressed immune system is prone to yeast infection in the ears. a large open sore like a broken blister may be too much for their immune system to handle.
if you use q-tips be sure to twist the cotton better so it doesn't pull off and get stuck in the ear canal. if you twist it the wrong way it unravels.
if it's getting too gooey in there, you can dip the q-tip in a hydrogen peroxide solution to clean and also dry it out. don't do it too often or the ear will get too dry and not only is it uncomfortable, it's harder for the ear to naturally fight germs.0 -
Thanks for the insight. I'm not using Q-tips. I tried with one this am, He let me do one, both ends. When I went to try with another, He groaned and whimpered. I got the message. I don't want to hurt him. Trying to be as gentle as I can. He deserves that.
I'm closer to this dog than any I've ever had. Loving, gentle, affectionate, goofy, playful, full of personality, fierce and protective when needed. The total package. Love him to death.
A great dog. Once in a lifetime dog. My Buddy.
He seems to be better.0 -
I have several dogs but my 2 Golden Retrievers get all kinds of ear problems.
I use this stuff called epi-otic. They don't like it but since I started using it once a week especially in the spring and summer when they are in the water a lot, they have zero ear problems.

You can make your own:
1/3 Alch
1/3 Vinegar
1/3 water
This works good too(Don't use on a cat):
8 oz Minted Witch Hazel
2 Drops of Clove Oil
5 Drops of Tea tree Oil
I put it in my dogs ears after every swim and when I get back from Duck hunting, even after a bath or just hosing them down.
I am not going to say they like it but they have gotten used to it and don't fight it so much anymore. You have to put about a tbl spoon in the ear hold them and message the lower part of the ear. Then let go and get back because its going everywhere, repeat on the other ear once you catch them again. Make sure if you have 2 dogs the other one is not around to see what happening[;)]
I had one dog(Dead now) shake his head so much he gave himself a cauliflower ear[:0] He was a goof ball but a great dog.
Hope Buddy gets better and does not get mad and eat you[;)]0 -
Buy some colloidal silver and rub inside his ear a couple of times a day, it will kill any microbial in there so it won't get infected... 0 -
Last week Akira got into it with a raccoon that he surprised in the backyard around midnight
It had wrecked on of the bird feeders and dragged it towards on of the yards fenced in corners under a large walnut tree
Animal control came and collected the corpse and will test it for rabies and ticks and other bad things though they don't think it was a sick animal
Akira broke it's back and neck and got clawed pretty good on the fore arm above the paw and took a small slice to his nose
He was very well behaved while being stitched up and tended to
The raccoon was big and aggressive and did not attempt to flee which seems unusual to me but we don't see many
Hope your pals ears improve - keep us in the loop and let us know what happens

You probably already know this, but I?ll remind you anyway. A dog?s ear canal is a straight shot to the inner working of the ear. The human ear has a few curves and turns that give a little protection to the eardrum and doctors still tell you never put anything smaller than your elbow in your ear canal. Be very careful when you?re doing anything with a dog?s ear, even cleaning them. As you mentioned he?ll let you know when it hurts. Go slow and be ready to back off. 0 -
How is he now?
Update?
Did he kill and eat you?????????
Just kidding[;)]0 -

Sorry, have not looked in here since last night.
I worked on his ear when I got home this evening. Warm wet soapy handtowel. Gently cleared some crusty scabs near his outer ear. (I think he got after his ear with his hind foot.) Kept wetting the towel and tried to squeeze some warm soapy water into his ear canal. As soon as the water entered his ear canal, He was violently shaking his head. Not a Happy Camper. [:0][B)] He let me do it about 3 times. After I got him cleaned up and cleared the scabs, I gently re-applied some Burn Cream with Lidocaine and anti-biotics, once I did that, He chilled out. He's not been shaking his head, so I think we did good. He got over being upset with me fairly quickly. [:D]
I hear on the dogs sensitive ears James RK. That is exactly why I am not using Q-tips.0
