slotted or solid jags...

Which do you use to clean your firearm...

the reason I ask, is that I have a friend who swears I'm nuts using a solid Jag. He claims it will damage the barrel when you pull the jag back through because there's not a patch to protect the barrel. I keep telling him, to start with you're always supposed to run a patch one way. Plus jags are not made of steel, they're made of bronze which is softer then the metal used firearms barrels. He adamantly disagrees with me.

To me I feel like I can get a more even "seal "inside the barrel then I can with the slotted Jag

So what do you guys use and why...

    Several answers actually. I use Ram Rodz a lot and carry them in my travel cleaning kit for CCWs: https://ramrodz.com/

    I also use patches almost always over a solid tip, 95% of the time o-ringed jags:

    I also use nylon brushes, and very rarely bronze brushes.

    I think the solvent has more to do with cleaning than the aggressiveness of the jag or brush, so I use Bore-Tec Eliminator:

    I also use their copper remover and rim-fire cleaners.

    I use both.

    If I am just cleaning a barrel I use the solid because the patches come off easy. If I have to really scrub a barrel I use a slotted one.

    The trick is to use a good Cleaning Rod so you will not damage your barrel. I like the Tipton Deluxe one piece Fiberglass Rods but Dewy makes a good product too and I have a few of theirs also.

    One thing about cleaning rods I have been shooting 17 cals for 40 years and back in the day it was a bitch to find a 17 cal rod. Now its easy thanks to all the 17 cals we have now.

    That's exactly how I feel, the solvent you use should do the work, the Jag/patch is just used to mop it out... Although I have some of those o-ring jags,but don't necessarily like them because I don't feel like they get into the grooves of the riflings as good as a patch does. They work good on a shotgun though...

    My friend thinks you need to scrub with the jag/patches

    And yes, always use the least aggressive method if/when you do need to scrub...

    Kind a like using plastic brush to clean barrels. Folks are saying how a bronze brush will scratch the barrel.

    That's exactly how I feel, the solvent you use should do the work, the Jag/patch is just used to mop it out...
