radon gas ?

If plastic vapor barrier is under concrete will radon gas
still get in the house ?

Is radon in all soils or just certain areas ?

    You have to have your house tested to know what the level is.

    Just certain soils/geology. Get test kit from Hardware store before worrying!

    As said- it is not everywhere, but some areas are noted to have very high levels. A plastic vapor barrier can help, but is not a guarantee by itself- too many variables. Do you have a sump pump? Fuel burning heat? Basement or slab on grade? Plumbing the penetrates floor slab? Have also seen very similar houses 1 city block apart with very different readings.

    For an answer to the levels in YOUR house, go get a test kit. If results are high, high a professional testing company.

    I have a slab on sand in east texas.

    Thanks for the input.

    It seems with good ventilation there won't be a danger.

    I was mostly just curious and not worried.

    A tree falling on me would be better to worry on.

    I got one of the kits, I think about 30 years ago, and the results from the kit said I was toast. I didn?t do anything else and I?m still here.

    I do get these little cancers on my skin and have to let the dermatologist cut or freeze them off about once a year, but he says that?s from fishing without a shirt or hat when I was a kid.

    According to Texas Tech East Texas has very low radon levels. See the map at the following site;

    I don't think I'd worry about it.

    I think that is true. They do a test around here when a house is sold. If test shows results too high then a remediation system has to installed usually at a cost of up to $2,500.

    If you don't install the system, you dont close. I have seen people who have owned homes for 30-50 years with no problems and now they have to install this system.

    At the time you could write everything I know about radon gas on the back of a postage stamp. I still remember some of it.

    To do what the test manufacturer recommended would have cost me considerably more than my house is worth. I decided it would make more sense to torch the house and buy a tent.

    To answer your question, I did the test because I wanted to know if the radon was high. Now I know.

    Re: landfill, sorry- not correct. Radon is a naturally occurring gas that results from the breakdown of uranium. Some areas have more than others. Louisiana is the only state I know of that has no "hot spots". Some areas (the notorious Reading PA "prong") has very high levels. Low exposures- not really a problem. High exposures can be a problem.

    Homes built 100 years ago, when the winds blew hard, the curtains flapped (whether the windows were closed or not). Newer houses are much tighter, and radon is not allowed to disperse.


    A lot of the work to reduce high levels is simple and fairly cheap- like caulking around floor slab penetrations, adding a vent fan. In doubt- especially if you are in a high dose area- test it.

    Since radon is linked to areas that are high in granite some busybody paranoid got the idea that granite countertops would give off enough radon to kill ya dead. Totally false.
