AR question from the uninformed
this applies to both ar15 and ar10....can the high profile front sight/gas block be changed to a low profile without messing anything else up on the upper?

The gas tube only goes into the base of the front sight so you could actually just cut off the top of the front sight and the gun would still function. The proper way would be to just swap the high profile front sight for a low profile version. If done carefully, you could still use the existing gas tube. 0 -
thanks. appreciate it...i will swap it out and keep the front sight in case the next owner might want it. i am dependant on scopes now with these old eyes. 0 -

When I had the same problem (front sight filling up my sight picture), I installed a 3/8" riser under my scope bases and the A2 sight disappeared.
That also put the body of the scope high enough to clear the flip-up rear sight, in it's down position. Now, if my scope is damaged, I unscrew it, flip up the rear sight, and go on shooting.
That was my fix anyway.0 -

The problem with that is the higher above the bore the sighting system is the more issues one has with proper trajectory if I can put it that way without getting chastised for doing so. Get your sighting system as low to the bore is best.
They make different gas blocks for the front sight. If you don't want to destroy the front sight then it has to be unpinned and slide off the front. Yes you have to remove the muzzle break for this. Then the new gas block has to be aligned and pinned to match the gas port in the barrel. That is not a normal do it yourself project. If you want to go cheap then just cut the front sight down. It's not worth that much anyway.0
