Had me another two grapefruit sized fried 'maters. Getting real good at measuring out the fish fry meal to dust them. I think I like the heirloom better. The fugly, bumpy ones with the naval orange outie.

They do look kind a like eggplant but no way do the 'maters soak up oil like eggplants.

I kind a liked the movie. Making the cop eat the dude was kind a funny.

To my knowledge I have never had fried green tomatoes. But then again when I was a kid, you get the belt if you questioned Moms cooking... So needless to say I ate everything without questioning it. The only things I asked what it was, was things that I like so that I could request them at later dates. Please enlighten me as to what they taste like.

Rem, they're delicious. They have a subtle acid tanginess, an almost green bean note, and a hint of sweetness. Done just enough, there's a semi-firm texture still there, along with juiciness. The usual breaded coating and the hot oil add comfort food factors.

Get you some! Right now's the time.

Slice firm green tomatoes 3/8" thick. Pat dry. Toss in seasoned (S&P)flour, then a light egg wash (one egg beaten with a spoonful of milk) and then tossed in fine white or yellow cornmeal. Let stand a few minutes so the coating firms up. Deep or pan fry in peanut oil at 350? until the cornmeal turns nut brown. Drain briefly on paper towels and serve still warm. Prepare to make more, because you'll want to.

Rem, the way my mother did them was wash, core and slice (do not peel) the tomatoes. Lightly salt and dip them in cornmeal, both sides. Drop them into frying pan with hot Crisco or lard until brown. Flip them over and brown on other side.

Eat them while they are still hot or at least warm. I like to let them cool enough to avoid blisters in my mouth, but not much more than that. I like them but not enough to drive eight hundred miles round trip to Tennessee for a plate full.

Thanks Rocky, they sound good. I'll have to try some. I'll bet they taste good with a pad of butter on them, like I eat my fried zucchini...

What do they taste like? Nothing like ripe tomatoes more like green bellpepper with a hint of a tomatoey tang to come. Eat it while hot and the coating still crunchy. They get soggy and will fall apart if you're slow. Dunk it in Ranch dressing.

My mom served fried green tomato's as a side dish when she made us fried side pork. The tomato's were cooked in the pork grease. [:p] The two went together like tomato soup & grilled cheese, or peas & carrots![:p]

She also used to make "Green Tomato Dill Pickles" during the canning season. Ohhhh?.sooooo?.good![:p]
