Vague memories of a house we lived in when I was 3.

First solid memory is my 4th birthday. Pops shipped a big red dump truck from Hong Kong and it arrived in time. Most significant events since then.

when I was 8-10 in that timeframe we used to go to an uncles farm for 2,3 weeks every summer, we helped, looking back probuble moreso got in the way, in the hayfields, he put it up loose. had an old model T, that was just frame motor and a bench seat, made into a tractor of sorts to pull the haywagon in the field. I learned to drive on that. me and a cousin would spend those weeks on the farm doing what we want during the week, working on weekends when my uncle was off.

they had sulfar water in the well, and would freeze a milk jug half full of water, in the morning fill it the rest of the way up and go to the hay field, to this day the smell of fresh cut hay brings the taste of that sulfar water to my mouth, it was nasty, but when you are hot and sweaty you drank it.

my grampa lived with my aunt and uncle, me and my cousin would mess with him all the time, I remember he hated things sour, he was in his late 80's then, my cousin and I snuck in his room one night and took his denture cup dumped the water out filled it with lemon juice, put it back on his nightstand, He woke us up yelling the next morning, my aunt warmed our britches that morning for that one.

we rode our bycicles about 3 miles down the road to get a bottle of pop from a small grocery store, I remember it was a nickle for pop and you got 2cents back for the bottle.

me and my cousin fought all the time, more out of boredom than anything else, my grampa used to shake his cane at us and tell us to break it up, many time the end of that can bouncing off our heads as he held it out and his hands shook so bad, looking back he probubly did it on purpose.

still we grew up fine, no mass murders, ect., and lived through all that stuff that they say will kill a kid now, I feel sorry my grandkids will never have those kind of memories, or grow up with those kind of experiences.

it is a different world today Dave, and I don't think all this technology has neccesarilly made it a better world.......

We moved from Maine to Connecticut in October of '61. Went from a smaller house to a rambling, old and cold farmhouse in Griswold.

I remember waking up the first night and pissing in the fireplace because I could not find the bathroom. I was two months shy of three years old.

I remember wearing my winter coat inside all the time because that house had crap for insulation. It was freezing ALL the time. We moved out that spring, to a place closer to my Dad's work.

The summer before I turned 5 we moved. I have a few memories from that first house.

I remember my grandpa getting me a tricycle for what was probably my 4th birthday (could have been younger). The handlebars weren't positioned right and he used his hand to turn the adjustment screw. I thought, "Wow, grandpa doesn't even need a wrench like most people would!"

I was watching Captain Kangaroo on television and I told my mom to turn it off and I would save it for later. She tried to explain it didn't work like that but I insisted.

My little sister and I wandered off towards the back of the property. Mom was very unhappy when she found us but I told her I was big enough to look out for my sister.

I woke up one night and heard my parents were up (summoning the stork to bring another sibling, I assume now). I wandered in to their bedroom and got promptly put back in my own bed with a warning that there was something nasty (I don't remember exactly what now) under the bed that would get me if got out of it again.

When I was 2 or so my dad was building a garage on the farm where we lived.

Mom spotted a tarantula near the house and called dad to come take care of it.

He brought a foot-long piece of 1x12 and dropped it on the tarantula, then stepped on it.

For the longest time I though he built the garage out of square pieces of 1x12![:D]

I just remember small bits and pieces from before I was about 5
one I was about three dad took me to the coal mine he worked at
the fellow running the coal car / shuttle ask if I wanted a ride back into
the mine . I remember clearly looking into the dark mine and backing away no way I wanted to go into the dark hole in the ground
looking back I would say because my mom and dad used the dark and booger men / devil to scare us kids all the time ... as a way to scare us to do things like come in or go to bed ..

after about 5 years old I remember a lot of my life

I never did try and scare my kids that way [:(!] I know how much it effected me for years afraid in the dark or not having my head covered up when I went to bed ..

One night in the field, sitting around a fire with some of my soldiers, we had this same discussion. One of my Sgts said the earliest he could remember was going to a picnic with his dad, coming home with his momma.

Took us a while to figure that out.

I remember my grandmother holding me up to a small dirty window pane in our fruit cellar and watching the top of our barn being lifted and tossed into the pasture beyond. (1952 or 53)

I was 4 or 5 years old. I remember a big white barn spider crawling down my brothers arm. , My mother being attended to by the doctor, when she received dozens of hornet stings (nearly died), A mother cow smashing through the barn door when Dad was showing me her new born calf.

I remember the first time I heard my father chuckle . He had walked through the room I was sleeping in opened the window and fired his shotgun in the air. Soon I heard the fence around the watermelon patch creek, a car start and roar off. Dad was walking back out of the room and chuckling with a big grin. We had a great watermelon patch and I was told Dad would freely give them away to anyone who stopped and asked. He had more fun dealing with the late night thieves I think.

I also remember the scream of a Mountain lion (Cougar) that was in our grove not allowing us to go out to the outdoor john.

All that and more from age 5 years or less, but don't ask me what I had to eat yesterday, or where I laid my pen minutes ago.
