Swimming In The Beach

My Daughter was getting in the water at 4 months old. I would blow in Mandys face and she would hold her breath and i would dip her in the water.

She was a lifeguard during the summer for years.

She has always been a better swimmer than me.[:(]

We went to Hollywood Florida to visit friends and we were playing in the ocean. Mandy was about 8 and was trying to catch a fish that kept coming close to us.

She asked me to try and catch the fish so now we are both trying. A man came up to us and told me that we should leave the fish alone. I asked him why?

He told me it was a barracuda. I asked him whats so big about that and he told me it has teeth. I thanked him and we stayed the rest of the day and the fish just kept swimming around us.

My wife now will not go in the water over her knees. If she sees a fish she is gone.

We have been to almost all of the caribbean islands and the water is so clear you can see 30 feet or more and she still will not go past her knees and she is a good swimmer.

    A few years ago while plugging for bluefish from a pier I watched a barracuda maybe three feet long holding beside a piling. This fish looked to be perfectly still in about three feet of water with people playing in the water within twenty feet of it. I dropped a Gotcha plug all over that fish and it completely ignored it. A few minutes later I was at the end of the pier where there were several live baits set for King Mackerel when a silver streak shot through the water and cut one of the baits in half.

    Mother in law lives in mexico, used to go all the time and there was a 4-5' barracuda we called barracuda charlie.

    When I was a young'un I was like a fish in the water. Born under the fish sign of the zodiac.[:)]
    Spent a lot of time in cold Great Lake's, from shallow to deeper than the grand old ocean.

    Could dive to fair depths and back while holding my breath for close to 2 minutes.

    As time passed, I did not swim for more than a decade. Bought a boat and took it out to a nice sized lake in northern Michigan. It was mid summer and hotter than Hadies. Decided to do a back flip dive off the bow and sank like a lead slab of rocks to the bottom!

    Getting back to the suface for air was almost the end of me, so I will say that swimming is not like riding a bike! [B)]

    The crocodile hunter (Steve Irwin) should have stayed with the croc's.

    But Nooooooooo,,, he had to go mess with "Stingrays". Got him in the lung, or so he thought,, bad news it got him in the heart and shortly thereafter he died.

    'Cudas are curious. They have been known to watch Commercial divers weld.

    Here's some fun trivia for you if you insist on 'catching fish' by hand:

    If you are fishing off a pier in Fla, how do you tell a Catfish from a baby shark?

    When you grab it by the tail and it turns around and bites you on the wrist, it's a baby shark.

    Never had a problem with barracudas diving or snorkeling. Was told long ago "no flash/jewelry and such"
    They follow and watch a lot but never have been aggressive in my experiences.
    More than a few at the Gulf condo never set foot in the sea.
    "OH NO there's creatures in there!!" my upstairs neighbor said.
    Salt for life here. Been bit, stung, crab clamped since I was 3
    Still safer than the freeway.
