leather reconditioning????

Have an old hatchet that has a handle of leather o-rings and was covered in some sort of sealant material. The sealant has gotten all cracked up, and the leather is needing to be reconditioned. How would I remove the outer sealant layer, and what would be the best way to recondition the o-rings and put something back over them for protection? Thought about light sanding.. Thoughts? Thanks in advance..

  What brand hatchet is it, Toad?
  
  No idea how bad the leather has gotten on your hatchet, but I ran into a similar situation with my Estwing hammer.
  
  Here's a couple of sites that have tips on replacing the handle. Also, Youtube has some good videos of Estwing handle repairs/replacements, just search for them.

  I have always had success using Neat's Foot oil.
