Mark and other M1 guys...

Reading the book ?Band of Brothers?:
?...Capt. Spiers...appreciated the way (Sgt.) Guth could take a file and work on the tripper housing of an M1 and make it fully automatic...?
Is this possible and was it common?

    Even assuming that the author meant "trigger housing" instead of "tripper housing", & that by "fully automatic" he meant "will continue to fire until the clip is ejected", the answer is still NO & NO.

    He likely confused it with the M1 carbine, which could easily be converted to a select fire M2 carbine with the addition/replacement of several parts, no filing needed.

    I agree with Neal, he is probably talking about the M1 Carbine. The M1 Rifle (Garand) has a number of design features which prevent it from firing full automatic. If these are defeated then the rifle is much more likely to "slam-fire" (as hunter86004 previously stated) than go full auto. Can it be done? Yes, I've seen photos of arms room modified rifles where ingenious armorers modified M1s to full auto, but these were performed by skilled personnel and were not field modifications. It is worth noting that in 1943 the Army requested that Springfield Armory study the possibility of converting the M1 Rifle to selective fire. The M1 proved to be a poor candidate for selective fire and after several years of trying to make the rifle function reliably in full automatic, Springfield gave up and moved on to the T44 Rifle, which had a new gas system, new bolt with a roller-lug and several other improved features. The T44 Rifle became to M14...and the rest, as they say, is history.

    It is well documented that Steven Ambrose plagiarized and misstated facts in many of his books.

    Like others have said You are not going to make a M1 Garand or Carbine Full auto with a file except For it to slam fire.

    There really is no reason to do that anyway. I have rarely seen any trained soldier fire his weapon in Full Auto or even 3 rd burst, there is no real value added and you waste ammo and miss a lot.
