Honda 4-wheeler
my son has a 2003 Honda Rincon 4-wheeler
it started missing or cutting out when in gear moving but it starts and idles just fine
we have changed spark plug and put some sea-foam in the gas tank
which has not helped
any ideas before I have to take it to the Honda shop [?]

While sea-foam in the gas works frequently, it's not a cure all.
Tear down the carbs and clean the jets. Most likely the pilot jet is crudded up.0 -
Not sure about a Honda but would replace fuel filter before going to the work of tearing down the carbs. 0 -
I have a 99 Forman doing the same thing. I have disassembled the carburetor 3 time and it?s still gagged up.
It will start fine but when I try to pull out, it coughs, backfires, and dies.0 -
If you're running ethanol gas that's no bueno for carbs. Had a quad carbed CBR1000 that had to have the carbs rebuilt because of the varnish in ehtanol gas. After that all I ran was PURE gas. 0 -
running non-ethanol gas 0 -
Check for vacuum leaks and there was some Hondas about that time frame that the camshafts wore out prematurely 0 -
Like Savage said check for vacuum leaks. If the air lead into the carb is a rubber hose I have seen those split between the air filter and carb. 0 -
thanks everyone 0 -
You can get a 2nd opinion at this link.

Most of them ATV carbs have a drain screw or plug in the bowl. Loosen the screw while the engine is cold and let the bowl drain.
I have to do this to my Honda and Yamaha ever once in awhile when they get PMS. (and use non-ethanol gas or you are asking for trouble)[;)]0 -
Check your parking brake safety switch on the left handlebar. They designed them to do just that if it was on. Sometimes they need to be adjusted or even disconnected to fix the problem. 0 -

I think I will try to tighten the brake lever up by adjusting the wing nut at the rear brake drum0 -
that did not fix it 0 -
Have you checked the timing? 0 -
no sir
I reckon I will take it to the Honda shop
thanks everyone0 -

Before you do, try wiggling wires. Spark Plug, Coil, connections ect. Mine does the same thing sometimes so I stop, shut it down and mess with the wires and it fires right back up and runs great again!
I'll be damned if I can find the one giving me the problem though!0 -

Disconnect all one by one and treat them to dielectric grease. It will improve electrical contact and go a long ways to weather/water proofing them.0 -
second the fuel filter, had a kawasaki that did the same thing, put inline filter on it, whenever it started to act up, just changed filter..... only few dollars, cheaper than shop....... 0 -

WAIT, Wait!
Just keep doing what we tell you. Then when you take it to the shop there will be enough wrong with it to justify the cost.0 -

Does it miss when you rev it in neutral? Or just when it's in gear and moving?
If this miss is all the time, most likely, there's something in the main jet.
I think you can remove the black panel on the side, loosen the carb clamps and turn the carb enough to twist the carb. There's a plug on the bottom of the carb. Remove that and the main jet is under that. Main jet is a slotted screw type. Remove it, blow it out.
I could be wrong. [:I] I used to do this for a living, but it's been a while.0 -

seems to rev up fine in neutral

I'm still thinking carburetor.
I don't think there are any safety switches on a Rincon that would cause this issue. That would have to be something that would retard the ignition, and I don't remember anything like that. Not that you couldn't have some electrical issue causing it. And not that my memory is what it should be! But I'd start with the carb.
I looked online at some photos and the Rincon doesn't have a plug like I thought. But the carb should come out easily. Loosen the clamps and pull it out of the manifold & airbox boot. I think you should be able to get it out & flip it over without loosening the cables, etc.
Just flip it over so it's upside down. The only thing loose in the bowl is a plastic baffle over the main jet.
Since you're there, take out each jet and spray some carb cleaner & compressed air through it. And also the long tube with the hex that the main jet screws into.
This is really a pretty simple operation and probably worth a shot if you're feeling mechanical.0 -
OK thanks 0 -
Our problem was a bad ground. Loose battery connection.
In these days of computers - the computer wants the correct voltage/milliamps whatever or they don't work right.0
