Porsche and Alfa and jag and Audi did it...
It's a branding game - trying to label and create an appearance of or affiliation / branding to get he performance muscle car
They will share parts and design concepts and components but mustangs will still be made as they are now - and this new crossover ute may generate sales and interests.
As most police departments have switched to SUV's a proper pursuit package or police interceptor variant is a good idea.

Ford is also eliminating the Taurus, so that may be the reasoning for eliminating the current Explorer platform. I'm not sold that the car based, transverse mounted engine, primary front wheel drive/AWD will be durable enough longterm for LE use. My assigned Police Interceptor has 50K miles on it and has some transmission issue, it's not run nearly as hard as our patrol vehicles.0 -

Many folks are unaware...
In the cold states (Wisconsin - Michigan - etc...) Chrysler pushed the full size plus enormous truck all wheel drive four door chargers on law enforcement - with a heavy duty police package and twin locking differentials
A police interceptor designated souped up large magnum V6 with tow package and headers and special exhaust (and in some cases a factory supercharger)
These were a quiet success - not an SUV - definitely a purpose built crossover for harsh winter conditions
You don't see many in the southern states - in fact in about 38 states you don't see them often
They offered a civilian variant and it sold rather well - beating out many SUV's
Dodge offered a full four door crew cab ram police package as well and it has proven to be a solid winter duty special service or interceptor police vehicle
There are a number of places around the world were the Porsche 5 door SUV crossover was adopted in limited numbers by law enforcement
And that damned full sized four door all wheel drive Honda sedan / crossover with the not quite a trunk / not quite a hatchback has been selling in police package dress - as well as their ridgeline pick up sedan utility thing

Ford has PPV F150...our Dodge's are junk...they are blowing our maintenance budget.
My Son while getting his engineering degree had an internship with a manufacturer of parts for Honda, Toyota, Nissan, and Chrysler, etc. He did QC and Product Improvement.
Honda had the tightest standards for tolerances in the business. Parts had to be nearly perfect for them to accept them.
Next was Toyota
He said if you could sweep them off the floor, Chrysler would accept them.0
