Electric clothes dryer question

Have a 20yo Whirlpool dryer that just started intermittent heating. I ran it for a full cycle and the clothes were still very damp with no heat being felt. Ran another full cycle and it produced heat and dried the clothes. It's done this 2-3 times. It's a Whirlpool LER3624EQ1. Any idea where my problem could be?

Yes, all the lint has been removed. I ain't that dumb.

    Have you pulled the back off and cleaned out the lint?

    My suggestion is to go to youtube and do a search on this model and for dryer problems like this. Youtube has saved me a lot of money because so many people have made videos showing how to analyze and repair so many things. Appliance parts are easy to find and usually a lot cheaper on line than parts stores if you can wait a few days for them to arrive.

    Lint will build up all the way back to the heating element and cause all kind of problems, including fire.

    there are 2 temperature controls in the heating circuit first I would check the one that is supposed to maintain temp at like 150 or so and it is marked with a range then check all the connections then check the overload which is marked like 200 or so but first off make sure you have good air coming out your vent cause most often they don't work because vents are blocked from lint.
    the temp sensors usually look like a disc that has 2 wires connected they are an easy fix and about $20 or so the overload is a one time fuse to prevent fires while the temp sensor opens and closes to maintain a set temperature to dry clothes.

    If you have checked all the obvious things and still have the problem consider this.

    You have 20 year old dryer, you will probably call a repairman, he will charge you around 80 to a 100 bucks to tell you, "Yes, your dryer isn't working." He then tears it apart and tells you the heating element needs replacing. After he tallies the cost of repairs, for labor and parts, will probably be more than half of what a new dryer costs...and you still have your 20 year old dryer.

    The above is based on my experience on appliance repair companies.

    Last week my dryer was doing the same thing as yours ? I bought a new Whirlpool Dryer for $329.00 from Lowes which was on sale marked down from $539.

    man if i got anywhere near 20 years out of a drier i would trash it and take advantage of any Christmas sales going on right now.

    New heating elements are $20 and easy to replace

    And, throw out the dryer sheets; they leave a sticky residue inside the collector/duct that lint sticks to. Eventually, the lint build up will cause the dryer to fail.

    new items designed to last 5 years or so and if you get 10 years you did good but I still maintain my 94 chevy truck and I still use my 20 year old washer and drier until they die beyond repair guess I'm old fashioned...?????????.or just old minded...????????..

    I have done this to a few dryers over the years easy repair and will keep it going . I would bet several DYI videos on you tube if you want to see whats involved

    1. Airflow-ensure there is no air flow restriction
    2. Heat element-one or both elements burnt out. Usually,both elements out=no heat. One element out=luke warm but still wet.
    3.High temp safety switch-will prevent power going to the heat elements

    DON'T BUY A NEW ONE! New appliances are poop these days, no matter the brand!

    Fix it, it doesn't cost much to repair older appliances. You can troubleshoot everything on it with a multi-meter.

    Look on youtube, or various appliance repair websites. They have videos and trouble-shooting guides.

    Old appliances are very easy to fix!

    This^^^ +100. Rebuild it and get another 20yrs out of it, buy a new one and hope you get more than 5yrs. When I couldn't do it for her, I sent these links to the G/F. With the parts, some hand tools, and the videos, she overhauled her dryer. That was 3yrs ago, it still runs fine, and she's a blond. While you have it apart, replace the drum belt and drum support rollers. Watch the videos and you'll see how simple they are to repair.

    Your timer has points that are dirty with carbon build up. Go on youtube fix the timer. If I was close I would do it for you,do mine every year.

    Dryers are the most repairable of all appliances. At least to me. The nly thing I could possibly add is to check your wiring coming in to the dryer. Maybe feel the breake for heat while it's running. My guess is restricted airflow. How long is the vent flue? Ours is about 8' long. It gets built up with lint. We can't use the high heat setting on our dryer because the flue (4") won't vent the heat quick enough and the element won't stay on.
