I stumbled on this great site and saw an opportunity to ask something I've been wondering. English is not my native language, so please excuse the errors (only in grammar or spelling - I don't expect any slack when it comes to the views I express...).
I'm a strong believer in the right to bear arms and live in a country that has few restrictions - but more than the majority of you would accept. In addition to a clear criminial record you need to pass a course on gun safety and spend a couple of days at the shooting range with an experienced trainer. You're the free to buy any rifle as long as it's not a military type automatic. They might nag a bit if you want a 50 cal, but it's still allowed. For handguns there's a requirement to join a club and then show that you know how to use the desired model. All in all, I'm ok with the Swedish regulations and there's no debate regarding further gun control in our society.
I know that the 2nd amendment is almost holy to many of you, but maybe a system like ours could put a stop to the seemingly endless attacks you now suffer from "gun ignorants" and their only valid argument (in my opinion) which is that guns shouldn't be carried around by people who doesn't know how to use them.
I presume you already have laws for compulsary military service in case the employed troops aren't enough. Compulsary training of "the armed militia" (isn't an armed militia what the 2nd amendment is all about) shouldn't be controlled by the goverment, but a referendum could put it in place, decide the scope and establish a self-regulating system that'd be "untouchable". Wouldn't that scare the criminals and keep the paper pushers in DC in line!
