I just can't let her go
I have been thinning the heard so to speak and getting rid of stuff I don't shoot anymore.
I don't really hunt anymore so most of the guns are hunting guns.
Well From the back of the safe I pulled out a Savage 340 in 30-30 I got many years ago in a Pawn Shop in Puyallup WA.
Most 340 look like crap, they have birch stocks crappy finishes and the blue job usually suck. These were working man's guns and were well made but no well finished.
There are so many of them with screw holes in the receiver where guys put crappy scopes on them.
Well Not Mine!
Mine is really nice looking. No extra holes, it has a Williams Peep sight and a slug where the rear sight was.
The Blueing is fantastic and the wood is some of the nicest I have seen. It has a beautiful pattern to it and rich dark grain.
The trigger is a sweet two stage with a crisp let off and it shoots like a house on fire! I load Pointy 130gr bullets and I can hit the gong at 300 yds every time. Even with factory 30-30 150gr or 170gr this gun delivers.
But where it really shines is shooting Cast lead 150gr bullets at 1700fps.
So I was looking at it last night after I cleaned and said I think I will shoot you on Sat.
Just got in from the back yard range. I put 80 rounds through her.
She stays............Too much fun to shoot.[;)]
Now I have to clean and oil her again, but I think I will keep it out of the safe.
I usually shoot a few garden deer and I think I will try her out on one.

I don't know about mythical but a 30-30 is a lot flatter shooting gun than most think especially with spitzer bullets.
Even factory flat tip ammo only drops 8" at 300 of you zero high at 100(+2"). It still has enough gas to go through a deer at that range. The real limiting factor for me are the sights.
All the 30-30 guns I have(4) have either Peep sights or a scope(My TC Super 14"). The 2 Winchester 94(Pre 1964) both have Lyman Reciever sights and the Savage 340 has a Williams Peep Sight that is well made but not as nice as a Lyman.
Just think about your 44 Ruger Carbine. The 30-30 is way more powerful at 100 yds than just about any 44 Magnum0 -

Never tried them pointy projectiles, but a good number of coyotes were slain with the 110gr RN launched by my Marlin 336. Not exactly match rifle accurate, but it shot MOC (minute of coyote) at well past 200yds.0 -
I had a boat load of those Speer Half jacket 100gr "Plinker" 30 cal projectiles. I think they made them to reload 30 carbine but man they were sweet in a 30-30.
Sadly I believe they stopped making them and I have about 150 of them left. BUt I think I saw where Hornaday is making them now.0 -

I've owned 340s and currently have a mod 99 in 30-30.
About 2.5 to 3 inches at 150 yards off the bench, with Spitzer bullets.
not record breaking but good enough for most hunting.0 -
I had a 340 for a long time the I gave it to a friend's son who could use the open sights a lot better then I could he got his first deer with it a couple years ago with it. 0 -
In my youth I had a 340 in 222 Remington with a fixed 4X Weaver scope on top. I tossed the barrel band, opened up the barrel channel a bit and glass bedded the action which was held in by a single bolt as I recall. Any woodchuck within 300 yards was in severe danger. 0 -
My BIL handed me a 340 in 225win and told me to hit that pop can down there, about 120 yds. From elbows on the truck fender I did it. I was impressed with the gun and the 225. 0
